1
What Is A Glacier?
  • Prepared By Matt Henne
  • A Science Lesson for 11th and 12th Graders

2
How Are Glaciers Formed?
  • Prepared By Matt Henne
  • A Science Lesson for 11th and 12th Graders

3
A Glacier is
  • A large accumulation of many years of snow,
transformed into ice. Also could be thought of
    as rivers of ice.

4
How a Glacier Forms
  • Snowfall builds up and snowflakes are packed into
grains. Melted snow quickly refreezes forming
    ice.

5
Anatomy of a Glacier.
  • Accumulation Zone - Where a glacier gains snow
and ice through snowfall and compressioin.
  • Ablation Zone - Where the galcier loses ice
    through melting and evaporation.
  • Equilibrium line - Divides the two areas.

6
Two Processes that Create Glacier Landforms.
  • Erosion - Process by which material is worn away
    from the Earths surface.
  • Deposition - The laying down of matter by a
    natural process.

7
How a Glacier Moves
  • A glaciers motion is called advance and retreat.
  • They move by internal Deformation which is due to
    pressure and stress.

8
Average Daily Movement
  • A glacier moves at an average rate of three
inches to six feet a day.

9
What is Calving?
  • Calving is when chunks of ice break off at the
    end of a glacier.
  • Ice breaks because the forward motion of the
    glacier makes the end unstable.
  • The chunks of ice are called icebergs.

10
What Does The Color of The Iceberg Tell Us?
  • Color tells us where it came from.
  • Color tells us a lot about what its made of.

Colors of Icebergs and What it Means.
