2What are clouds?
-
- Clouds in some form or another are water.
Clouds are either small water droplets or tiny
pieces of ice particles. Meteorologists rank
clouds according to their height and whether or
not they are flat or puffy.
34 Types of Clouds
-
- Most people say that there are only three main
types of clouds. Today will discuss those three
types plus another. These are the types of
clouds - Stratus
- Cirrus
- Cumulus
- Cumulonimbus
-
4Stratus Clouds
- Uniform grayish clouds
- Cover the entire sky
- Resemble fog that hasnt yet reached the ground
- No precipitation, but at times may drizzle
- When a thick fog "lifts," the resulting clouds
are low stratus.
5Examples of Stratus Clouds
6Examples of Stratus clouds
- Covers majority of sky
- Uniformly gray
7Examples of Stratus Clouds
- Covers the entire sky
- Gray
8Weather associated with Stratus Clouds
- Overcast day
- Steady mist or drizzle
- Stay in one place for several days.
9Cirrus Clouds
- Thin and often wispy type clouds
- form above 18,000 feet
- fair weather
- point in the direction of air movement at their
elevation (usually moves from west to east) - Formed by ice needles or spicules.
10Examples of Cirrus Clouds
- Thin and wispy
- Pointing to direction of air movement
11Examples of Cirrus Clouds
- Fair weather
- Thin and wispy
12Weather associated with Cirrus Clouds
- Fair to pleasant weather
- Clouds are usually white
- By watching movement of clouds you can tell which
direction weather is approaching
13Cumulus Clouds
- Flat bases and very puffy (like floating cotton)
- usually very isolated with large areas of blue
sky in between the clouds. - form below 6,000 feet and are relatively thin
14Examples of Cumulus Clouds
- Very Puffy
- Isolated with blue sky in between
15Examples of Cumulus Clouds
- Very puffy
- Unstable atmosphere. Causing cumulonimbus clouds
which bring thunderstorms.
16Weather associated with Cumulus clouds
- If clouds are low then fair weather exists
- If atmosphere is unstable enough and clouds are
high, cumulonimbus clouds can form which brings
rain and thunderstorms.
17Cumulonimbus Clouds
- Thunderstorm clouds
- Massive, dark gray to black clouds
- Tremendous amounts of energy released by
condensation of water vapor within a
cumulonimbus. - Cumulonimbus clouds typically form where the air
is very unstable, especially along cold fronts.
18Examples of Cumulonimbus Clouds
- Very black sky
- Lots of lightning
- You can see the
- energy being produced
19Examples of Cumulonimbus Clouds
- Dark grey and black
- You can see that bad
- weather is approaching
20Weather Associated with Cumulonimbus Clouds
- Can be seen on a warm summer day
- Can bring strong winds, hail, and rain
- Can produce lightning, thunder, flash floods and
tornadoes.
21Lets Practice!!!
22Can you name the four types of clouds we
discussed today?
- Cumulus, nimbostratus, stratus
and - puffy clouds.
- Cirrus, stratus, cumulonimbus and
- Cumulus clouds.
- Stratocumulus, cirrus,
cirrostratus and - cumulus.
- Altocumulus, wispy, cirrus and

37In conclusion
- Have you ever noticed how many different types
of clouds float in the sky? Some are white and
lumpy while others are dark and scary and some
look like a big gray blanket which covers the
whole sky. Now that you know a little more about
clouds, you can place a name with almost every
cloud in the sky.
