Title: Matching Indicators

1
Matching Indicators Data
2
Learning Objectives
  • At the end of the session, participants should
    be able to
  • Name different types of data
  • Identify different sources of data
  • Link indicators to data types sources

3
Result, Data or Indicator?
  • Result
  • A statement that identifies what we hope to
    accomplish
  • Data
  • Gathered information to measure how well a
program or activity accomplishes an intended
    result
  • Indicator
  • A statement that tells us what it is that will
be measured to determine whether or not a result
    has been accomplished

4
Indicators and Data
  • They directly unambiguously measure results
  • Indicators data must therefore be properly
    aligned

5
Performance Data Sources
  • Primary Data are collected directly by the
program team (training attendance sheets, sales
    receipts, volume of cassava harvested).
  • Secondary Data are gathered from sources outside
    of project (population statistics, national
    budget information, school registers, national
    health surveys).
  • Proxy Data are data from indirect sources (e.g.,
tin roof as a measure of family income) that
    substitute for primary data

6
Performance Data Types 1
  • Quantitative
  • Capable of being measured or expressed in
    numerical terms
  • Numbers of hectares, people
  • Percentages rural/urban
  • Ratios doctors to people, pupil per teacher

7
Performance Data Types 2
  • Qualitative
  • Relating to or based on quality or character,
often as opposed to size or quantity
  • Question What did you think about the training
  • Response I thought the training was very
    good.
  • Words can create pictures of change
  • The quality of Parliamentary debate has improved.
  • Women report that it is becoming easier to get
jobs that were once only available to men

8
Sometimes, Qualitative Data. . .
  • Can be transformed into numbers that represent
words such as a rating scale
  • Overall, how would rate the ART training?
  • Very Good Not very Terrible
  • good good
  • ? ? ?
    ?

Indicator Number of people who rated the ART
training either very good or good 52
9
Linking Results, Data and Indicators
  • Performance Indicator
  • Number of election officials trained
  • Data
  • Training attendance records
  • Training materials
  • Result
  • Enhanced credibility of the electoral process

10
Matching Indicators with Data 1
  • Establish the data source
  • Who do I need to talk to in order get this
    data?
  • Primary data collection
  • Methods instruments for collecting data
    (questionnaires, observation forms, training
    sign-in sheets)
  • Secondary data
  • consider the method of calculating the specific
data point the sources of data

11
Matching Indicators with Data 2
  • Establish the data Type
  • Quantitative
  • Numbers
  • Percentages
  • Ratios
  • Qualitative
  • Milestones
  • Rates

12
Exercise 1 Linking Indicators with Data
  • Read the scenario
  • Note the target result
  • Note the indicator(s)
  • Identify the source and type of data needed
  • Design a monitoring tool to capture the data
  • Assess the tools developed by other groups
