What is a Teacher Center ???
  • A Teacher Center is a Staff Development Provider
  • Its professional development from the bottom up.
  • NYS Ed Law 316 states -- Teacher Centers must be
    controlled by a board made up of a majority of
    teaches appointed by the bargaining agent.
  • A Teacher Center can be a location that teachers
    come to or can be an office that brings
    programs to teachers in specific locations like
    a school.

Teacher Center Mission
  • To provide quality professional development to
    support the goals of the Professional
    Development Plan
  • Develop and implement professional. development
    activities directed at increasing student
    achievement.
  • Support the needs of the teachers, districts,
    students and education community as needs change.

Who controls the Teacher Center?
  • A policy Board is made up of the following
  • Teachers appointed by the bargaining agent (must
    make up a majority )
  • Administrators appointed by the B.O.E. (or Supt)
  • A college representative
  • A parent
  • A business representative

How do Activities get developed?
  • Each district has a staff development team that
    controls the funding for activities
  • Teachers submit requests to their local staff
    development teams
  • The local teams approve the requests
  • The local team forwards the request to the TC
    office for implementation
  • The TC program director arranges the logistics to
    facilitate the running of the activity

Examples of TC activities
  • Assist educators in assessing and meeting the
    learning needs of students.
  • Provide computer demonstration and training sites
    and programs for educators.
  • Promote educators' use of and involvement in
    educational research to develop and produce
    curricula - and curricular material.
  • Provide educators with training for the
    improvement of teaching skills.

Examples of TC activities
  • Provide a location and atmosphere to share
    resources, ideas, methods, information,materials
    and strategies.
  • Train educators to prepare students to use
    technology, teach critical thinking and use
    proven strategies to improve student
    achievement.

Technology
  • Introduce teachers to new technology.
  • Update teacher skills as technology changes.
  • Provide opportunities for teachers to review new
    technology strategies for the classroom.
