Title: A great Book

1

Things a Teacher Should Never Forget!
ABC
  • A great Book

2
  • Part of our responsibility as an EC-4 teacher is
to fulfill competency six. Competency six
consist of teachers managing classroom routines
and behaviors. To gain a better understanding of
this professional responsibility, I have created
an ABC book which provides roles for teachers to
    implement in the classroom.

3
A A is for Ability
  • All children have the ability to learn when
    given appropriate instruction. When children
work on cooperative learning assignments the
children should have different levels of ability
and achievement. Children benefit from each
    others varying abilities.

4
B B is for Basic Needs
  • Human beings are born with five basic needs. If
what children are asked to do in schools does not
meet one or more of these needs, they will do the
work poorly or not do the work at all. The five
needs are survival, love, power, fun, and freedom.

5
C C is for Consistency
  • Teachers should be consistent when laying down
the rules and enforcing them in the class.
Teachers who are consistent, create a classroom
where children are aware of their expectations
and are capable of following through with what is
    expected of them.

6
D D is for Demonstration
  • Learning is more affective when teachers clearly
model and explain behaviors and procedures
    expected of the students.

7
E E is for Expectations
  • Learning is more affective when students,
parents, and teachers believe that successful
    learning experiences and appropriate behavior
will occur. Students are supported and
    encouraged by these positive expectations.

8
F F is for Fun
  • When young children get excited about learning
and teachers realize that learning is a social
    process, classrooms become dynamic exciting
    places.

9
G G is for Groups
  • For children to effectively work in groups the
class as a whole must be jelled into a supportive
community, where all learners understand what is
expected of them and feel invited to participate
in learning. It was once said that even
brilliant lessons have no value unless children
value learning, each other, and the learning
    community!

10
H H is for Hints
  • Offering hints can really engage children in
their learning process. Hints can be used as
scaffolding, which is an important role as a
    teacher.

11
I I is for Independent Learners
  • A goal that you really want to achieve in your
classroom is for children to become independent
learners. Children should come to see themselves
as empowered to learn and take responsibility for
    their actions.

12
J J is for Juncture
  • Every child is going to be different in your
classroom. It is important that as a teacher you
create an atmosphere where all differences can be
put aside to assure the class will be joined as
    one community.

13
K K is for Kinesthetic Learners
  • Active movement activities are important for
young children. Especially for those who are
tactile and kinesthetic learners. Children learn
a great deal when they are actively involved in
    the different lessons.

14
L L is for Love
  • My first day of being in a classroom really
reinsured me of my purpose for becoming an early
childhood educator. Children flourish when they
feel loved and nothing is more rewarding than the
love I get back from the children.

15
M M is for Modeling
  • Actions speak louder than words!

16
N N is for Nurturing Environment
  • Children can learn best in a classroom where
    childrens emotional, social, and psychological
needs are met, as well as their intellectual
    needs.

17
O O is for Organization
  • Creating a caring, supportive environment
requires that teachers understand how young
children function and how to organize student
groups to facilitate cooperation and productivity.

18
P P is for Praise
  • Children love nothing more than to be
    acknowledged and praised for their
accomplishments. This simple recognition can go
a long way and also reinforces the concept that
children are ultimately responsible for their own
    learning.

19
Q Q is for Quality Programs
  • Respectable quality programs should be
integrated into the curriculum to better educate
    students. There are wonderful resources
available to help accommodate each individual in
    the classroom.

20
R R is for Routines
  • Establishing consistent and predictable
classroom routines is the best way to make
children feel confident and secure. When
routines are established teachers can devote more
    class time to instructional activities.

21
S S is for Signaling
  • Signaling is a wonderful classroom management
strategy that can gain all students attention in
    a quick and untimely manner.
  • The best signal that I have heard yet is from my
friend who is also a PUMA student. Her SBTE
    teacher says YEE-HAW! So classic!

22
T T is for Transitions
  • Successful learning depends on the development
of an environment in which children easily move
from one activity to the next. Good transitions
through the day can make a day go smoother which
aids to more on task student behavior.

23
U U is for Using Different Materials
  • Providing a variety of materials in your
classroom can only entice students to want to do
more! Because some materials may have never
been seen by the children, materials should be
correctly modeled to prevent any managerial
    problems from arising.

24
V V is for Volunteers
  • Children benefit from the smaller
adult-to-students ratios that exist when other
adults help in the classroom. It is wonderful to
involve parents and open the door to a better
communication. Some things volunteers can help
do are preparing materials, working on specific
skills with small groups, tutoring, reading with
    children, and typing newsletters.

25
W W is for Window
  • Teachers should take the time to know each
student. When a teacher knows her students, then
the student is like and window. You can look
inside and really understand that child.

26
X X is for Xtra
  • It takes time to create a classroom environment
where the students routines and behaviors are
easily managed. You need to spend Xtra time at
the beginning of the year to create this
    idealistic atmosphere.

27
Y Y is for Yielding
  • Teachers learn as much from students as students
do from teachers. It is important to listen and
yield to what students have to say because
children are the best scientists and they can
bring out amazing points, some that you may not
    have ever thought about.

28
Z Z is for Zoo
  • There is a time and place for children to play.
Although play is beneficial to the children they
should be reminded that the school is not a ZOO!
