COMENIUS 2.1. Project CITIES
  • CITIES - Chemistry and Industry for Teachers in
    European Schools
  • Development of Course modules - not only seen as
conduits for information but also a means to
change attitudes and to increase awareness of
    teachers
  • Hope to make teachers knowledgeable guides for
their pupils in what chemistry does and can
    achieve for them and society

3
COMENIUS 2.1. Project History
  • Previous projects IDEAS and FACE (network) study
and compare practice oriented education and
    training
  • First personal contact to Lutz Mühl and Reinhard
    Reibsch July 2005
  • Presentation education issues Leo Gros to Working
Group and Plenary Meeting Social Dialogue in
    Sept. 2005
  • Intensive discussions on project outline with
working group members in Dec. 2005 and Jan. 2006

4
COMENIUS 2.1. Feb. 06 meeting Questions of
Social Partners (1)
  • Relevance for social partners?
  • project is based on needs of industry (inter
    alia anticipated shortage of skilled
workforce) taking into account existing Survey
on training, education and life long learning of
education working group (Jeanette, Simon) of
Social Dialogue and needs evaluation to be done
    until Dec. 2006
  • one aim is the improvement of the image of
chemistry (see impact) and hence a basis for
    better workforce
  • Location of courses and industry links
  • training would include site visits to industry
and/or take place in industry-based locations
  • training would include secondment by industry
    colleagues and industry visits/placements of
teachers, as well as participation of industry
and social partners in teacher training units

5
COMENIUS 2.1. Feb. 06 meeting Questions of
Social Partners (2)
  • Impact in the long term
  • teachers with better feeling/empathy for
    industry facts and needsawareness, attitudes
  • more balanced chemistry curricula (taking into
account applied chemical skills, the societal
    relevance of chemistry etc.)
  • due attention to chemistry studies (and
chemistry professions in general) on the market
place for education, training and jobs
  •
  • Involvement of/access to target groups
  • access to teachers e.g. through learned
    societies (divisions of chemical education)
  • local educational authorites/teachers training
    centers
  • existing initiatives involving industry
  •

COMENIUS 2.1. Feb. 06 meeting Questions of
Social Partners (3)
  • Social partners in the project Form of
    partnership and roles
  •
  • Full partnership in project of both employers
    and trade unions
  • their responsible legal entitie(s) which become
partners to be determined by social partners
  • social partners as donors, acceptors,
    evaluators and disseminators
  •    donors needs, good practice, facts,
contributions to module contents, site visits,
    secondment
  •    acceptors full access to all project
    products
  •    evaluators read/check all course material
for consistency with facts, developments and
    needs in the sector
  •    disseminators use all their dissemination
    channels for course announcement and
    information on project
  •

COMENIUS 2.1. Feb. 06 meeting Questions of
Social Partners (4)
  •
  • Regular evaluation
  •
  • Social partners propose evaluators (external to
    the project)
  •    1-2 people as members of Project Monitoring
Evaluation Board (they would also act as liaison
officers between project and social dialogue
    group)
  •    experts to test and evaluate projects
    products
  • Reports by project managers to education working
group of social dialogue as needed
  •

Project CITIES features
  • Target groups Secondary school teachers and
    their students
  • Main activities Needs validation, making,
    testing and dissemination of modules
  • Teacher training programme for chemistry teachers
in 5 different languages with parts published in
    three more languages
  • The project consortium sees this programme as a
step towards a future Euro-teacher label
    awarded to in-service teachers

9

special respect to the context of chemistry and
    chemical industry (Lisbon strategy, Bologna
declaration etc.) and on trends in the European
    development of an educational space
