What is Job Retention?
  • Early intervention to prevent loss of job
  • Why is this service needed?
  • Job retention is not seen as part of a GPs
    duties
  • Health services treat the symptoms but not the
    causes of long-term absence from work
  • Studies show that people who are out of work for
    6 months are highly unlikely to return to work
  • At the moment there is no other help available to
    deal with the reasons for being unable to work

Common reasons for absence
  • Back problems etc often caused by inappropriate
    working conditions
  • Asthma, heart disease etc
  • Mental Health / Stress
  • Work related stress / personal issues are the
    highest proportion of referrals to-date
  • Severe mental health problems eg schizophrenia,
    bi-polar disorder

Absence Implications
  • 20 of employees will experience stress related
    absences from work per year
  • The number of sick days taken per year because of
    stress have doubled over 7 years
  • (1995 6.5 million 2002 13.5 million)
  • 370 million in costs to employers (1996 prices)
  • 3.75 billion cost to society each year (1996
    prices)
  • Health benefits, health care, etc.

  • Job retention is becoming an increasing priority
    for Government

Retention methods
  • Systems
  • Signposting and intensive support
  • Mediation with employers
  • Knowledge of employment law
  • Partnership with GPs, employers and advisory
    organisations
  • Location - within health centre

Results so far
  • 56 people assisted
  • 61 of referrals successfully staying in same
    work (others ongoing).
  • 9 changed employer
  • Excellent feedback from GPs, patients and
    employers
  • Interest from PCT in expanding the scheme

    do your work
  • Relationships - bullying/harassment - poor
    management
  • Culture - Open or autocratic- sexist-unfair
    promotion opportunities
