  • Remember, there are two kinds of verbs
  • Linking Verbs
  • Action Verbs

    the action can be physical or mental.
  • For ex.
  • Harry ate the hamburger.

    vacation.

  • Action verbs, just like linking verbs, have
    complements.
  • The complements of action verbs are called
    objects.

Action Verbs Subject Complements
  • A Direct Object is a word or a group of words
    that names the receiver of the action of an
    action verb.
  • It answers the question What? or Whom?
  • For example Sammy dunked the ball.
  • What did Sammy dunk? The ball.

  • The dog ate the newspaper.
  • What did the dog eat?
  • The newspaper.

  • An Indirect Object is a word or group of words
    that tells to what, to whom, or for whom an
    action is done.
  • The indirect object usually comes between the
    verb and the direct object.
  • For example Mother bought Sally a sweater.
  • What did mother buy? A sweater
  • For whom did she buy it? Sally
  • Mother DID NOT buy Sally.

Linking Verbs
  • A linking verb links the subject of the
    sentence to a word in the predicate.
  • The most common linking verbs are forms of the
    verb be.
  • Ex. is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been
  • John is president of the Green Club.

  • However, linking verbs are also verbs that
    express condition.
  • Ex. Look, smell, feel, sound, taste, grow,
    appear, become, seem
  • The perfume smells sweet.

  • The weather seems cooler today than yesterday.
  • The man looks sad.

Complements of Linking Verbs
  • Just like action verbs have complements,
    linking verbs have complements.
  • There are two kinds of subject complements for
    a linking verb
  • Predicate nouns (PN)
  • Predicate adjectives (PA)

Predicate Nouns
  • A predicate noun is a noun or pronoun that
    follows a linking verb and identifies the
    subject.
  • Example A hurricane is a violent tropical
    whirlwind.
  • Linking verb is
  • subject complement whirlwind (PN)

Predicate Adjectives
  • A predicate adjective is an adjective that
    follows a linking verb and describes the subject.
  • Ex. Their winds are strong.
  • The predicate adjective strong describes the
    subject, winds.
