Correct spray gun technique involves four main
rules.

Spray gun distance.
Spray gun angle.
Paint overlap.
Triggering.

Spray gun distance.
For correct atomisation the spray gun should be
kept at 150mm to 200mm from surface to be
sprayed. Held too close to the surface can cause
runs and sags. Held too far can result in dry
spray or over spray.

Spray gun angle.
The spray gun should be kept at an angle of 90
degrees to the work surface. Not spraying at 90
degrees will result in an arcing action. The
result being an uneven coverage of paint
therefore runs, sags and dry spots
will occur.

Paint overlap.
For an even coverage of paint to occur an overlap
of 50 should be maintained on each paint
stroke. Not maintaining an overlap of 50 will
result in an uneven coverage consequently runs
and sags will occur.

Triggering.
At the end of each stroke the gun should be half
triggered to prevent the flow of paint. Failure
to trigger off at the end of each spray stroke
will result in an increase of paint at the
end of each spray stroke. The result
being either a run or sag.
