32126 CM Review
2
Every business is an information business
3
information policy
  • defines
  • objectives of information use (and the priorities
    among them)
  • what information means in the context of what
the organisation is in business for
  • principles on which it will manage information
  • principles for the use of human resources in
    managing information
  • principles for the use of technology to support
    information management
  • principles it will apply in relation to
    establishing the cost-effectiveness of
    information and knowledge

4
information strategy
  • is the detailed expression of the information
    policy in terms of
  • objectives, targets and actions to achieve them
  • provides the framework for the management of
    information
  • supported by appropriate systems it is the
    vehicle for
  • maintaining, managing and applying the
    organisations information resources
  • supporting the organisations essential knowledge
base and all who contribute to it with strategic
intelligence for achieving key business objectives

5
information management
  • is the implementation of an information strategy
in order to meet information objectives and is
    concerned with
  • how information is acquired, recorded and stored
  • where info resources are located in the
organisation and who has responsibility for them
  • how info flows within the organisation and
between the organisation and its environment
  • how the organisation uses information
  • how IT supports the users of information
  • what information costs and the value it
    contributes
  • how effectively all these info-related activities
    contribute towards the organisations objectives

6
Activity the information strategy
  • Read the article Every business is an
information business by Michael Earl (2001)
  • Discussion questions
  • Information and strategy - has the organisation
that you work for made any strategic moves
directly related to the acquisition of
    information?
  • What are value chains/virtual value chains?
  • Value of information - what ways is your
organization making use of information to add
    value/improve effectiveness?

7
user research
  • There are many different ways we can gather
information about current and potential users of
    our products, including
  • surveys, interviews, focus groups
  • ethnographic studies, workplace observations
  • purchasing research from third parties
  • looking back at our own companies earlier research

8
personas
  • personas are
  • precise, detailed descriptions of users that
    describe their lives and goals
  • they
  • provide a summary of a target audience for our
    web site/product etc.
  • including beliefs, physical characteristics, work
    and home tasks and activities
  • and are developed from our user research and
    shared amongst the design team

9
scenarios
  • A scenario is
  • a description of a situation where a user is
carrying out a task in order to achieve a goal
  • they help us to build up a picture of the
contexts of use of our system/product
  • for instance, is the user working in a noisy
space, are they likely to be interrupted, are
there time pressures or other constraints?
  • Scenarios give the design team a common set of
activities to design for and help use to build a
coherent picture of the design space we are
    working in.

10
affinity diagrams
  • An affinity diagram is a method for creating
logical clusters of information and identifying
    the links between them
  • write the name of each concept/activity/informatio
    n chunk on a post-it note
  • group related notes together
  • group related groups together
  • draw links between related groups
  • develop a hierarchy or network of related logical
    information groups
  • This activity can be repeated with different
users to establish a comprehensive representation
(or at least help the designers understand the
ways that different users view the information
    content

11
web site planning diagrams
  • Flow charts are used to validate navigation
design and as a design tool to enable
communication between members of the design team
    and designers and users

12
concept maps and hierarchies
13
navigation flowcharts
14
information web site
  • You work for a company that is developing a web
site that contains information about all films
currently showing and upcoming in the Sydney
region. The companys revenue model will be
advertising based - they will sell advertising
    space on each page.
  • create a persona for a university student who
likes to go to the movies with her/his friends
  • write a scenario of choosing a suitable film
  • exchange personas with another group and walk the
new persona through your scenario (what happens?)
  • having written the scenario think about the
important aspects of the task, that is, their
    sequencing, priorities etc.
  • identify the key types/elements of information
that should be included on the site
  • organize the information elements into a hierarchy

15
Web Usability
  • Web Usability Considerations
  • Cover the Usability Considerations for
Accessibility covered in Lecture 4 and Workshop.
  • Take Examples from the activity on
diveintoaccessibity and prepare a case for blind
    persons accessibility.
