NLC WBS, Generic info

• The WBS is a hierarchical structure to display
  component counts and cost roll up
• The WBS is based upon in what order the project
  is put together, not necessarily who is doing it.
• NLC has chosen SUCCESS from US Cost to accomplish
  the WBS process

• We define our beam line in a transport deck
• Systems Engineering makes a head count of
  components based on the transport deck
• Component parameters are defined by Systems
  Engineering and the appropriate physicist

  engineering disciplines

• Power Conversion - Tony Donaldson

• The System Engineer together with the Project
  Coordination Group creates the WBS tree
• Every branch in the tree is defined by the
  Systems Engineer in the WBS Dictionary
• Every Engineering Discipline creates a parts
  assembly in a Resource Break Down Structure

• Each assembly is defined by the engineer in the
  RBS dictionary
• Parallel to the RBS structure a Detailed Items
  structure is created, DI
• In the 1st iterations the assemblies are priced
  in the RBS

• In a 2nd iteration the assembly price is nulled
  and will be replaced by cost from the DI
  structure
• The assemblies are used to populate the WBS tree

NLC WBS, Present Status-1

• The transport deck is converted to a list of
  components, their locations and their main
  characteristics, this list includes vacuum
  components
• The list has been given the the various
  engineering disciplines
• The magnet specifications and associated cost
  have been developed in EXCEL

• The EXCEL files are being converted in to a
  SUCCESS format
• Power Conversion has worked in EXCEL, the results
  will be presented on Wednesday this week
• Vacuum hardware and its associated have been
  developed in EXCEL, the results are converted in
  to SUCCESS format

• Controls have not developed the RBS or the DI for
  NLC Beam Delivery
• Conventional Facilities are working directly in
  SUCCESS and developing cost models based on
  Facilities Needs for NLC Beam Delivery, Rev 1.4
• WBS definitions have been written down to level 4
  in the WBS tree

• The writing of RBS definitions is in progress
• More WBS definitions will follow

• The WBS is the language of DOE
• The WBS will determine the funding of the NLC
  project
• The WBS is a management tool for NLC upper
  management
