  • Early 1800s- Cheyenne split into two bands the
southern near the Platte Rivers and the northern
    near Black Hills, South Dakota.
  • The 1850s gold rush caused the Colorado War.
  • In 1851 the Cheyenne territory was established in
    Colorado.
  • November 27, 1868- Battle Of Washita River took
    place.
  • They defeated Custer at the Little Big Horn.

CULTURAL FEATURES
  • During our vacation, we met 10 bands of Cheyenne
Indians. These bands live spread out across the
Great Plains. Because we wanted to meet all the
tribes, we traveled from Colorado to South
    Dakota.
  • We found that all the tribes practiced Shamanism.
In this, they dance and practice medicine. We
found it very funny that they used our techniques
of ecstasy to heighten the intensity of the
    ceremony.

CULTURE CONT.
  • One of the dances that they preformed for us was
the Sun Dance. This was extremely interesting
because they are one of the few tribes that
present it in its most elaborate form. During the
ceremony, the Cheyenne dance, sing, drum, have
    visions, and sometimes experiment with
    self-torture.
  • As you know, most cultures have gods. The
Cheyenne are no different, they recognize The
Wise One Above and a God Beneath the Ground, four
spirits that live at the points of the compass.

CULTURE CONT.
  • Like we do today, the Cheyenne value certain
objects too. These objects include a sacred
bundle, hats made from the skin and hair of
buffalo, and four arrows, two for hunting and two
    for battle.
