  • "Well, Rattay did fine. Too bad he can't get any
protection because I think he could develop into
a good QB if he didn't have to fear for his life.
What impresses me is he's doing so well with a
bum shoulder and thumb. The kid is a passer and
makes up for what he lacks in mobility and size
with pocket presence and a strong, accurate
arm.No, he won't make the Pro Bowl for being on
such a sorry team, but I can't criticize the guy.
Does all he can with what he's got and the
numbers back him up. BTW, he and Garcia are the
only two QBs in the last 10 years to have 400
yard passing games. An undrafted QB and a 7th
    rounder."

  • "The 49ers lost another game Sunday, but they
finally might have figured out how best to use
quarterback Tim Rattay. In a season like this,
that would count as progress. It's still too
early to tell whether Rattay, who has started
eight games in his NFL career, will prove worthy
of becoming a long-time starter, but he never was
going to have a chance if the 49ers insisted on
trying to make him a pocket passer. That's
because Rattay was shortchanged in two key areas
He's short (just 6-feet tall) and not
particularly nimble. So, to succeed as an NFL
quarterback, he can't afford to simply stand in
the pocket because he can't see over the tall
linemen and he's a standing target for pass
rushers. He does his best work in the shotgun
formation or throwing on planned rollouts,
situations in which he can see the field better
and is not such an easy pass-rush target.

  • "Yo, Stat-Boy. Sure, 128-198 (64.6), 1436 yards,
9 TDs, 4 INTs, QB rating 92.9 for poor Rattay.
But, then again, Roethlisberger is 107-155 (60),
1316 yards, 11 TDs, 5 INTs, QB rating 105.2 And
his team is winning game after game. That said,
Rattay played well till the 4th quater when he
pulled a DeBerg and threw to the wrong team. What
was good is the 9ers had him rolling out most of
the game instead of hanging in the pocket where
he's too short to see anything. Roethlisberger is
an ideal pocket QB because he's 6'5", 5" taller
than poor Rattay. And 240 pounds vs. Rattay at
    200. As for Carter, it's good to have him back
despite the low production. The guy had a cyst
near the spine and couldn't sit down or lie down
because it felt "like a knife in my back." He'll
get stronger and the defense needs him. He may
even make some tackles and get some sacks. The
9ers are a bad team, but they are young and
should improve. Rattay may not be the long-term
answer at QB but and hopefully the 9ers will get
someone better. Rattay would be a fine back-up if
he proves not to have the tools to be a
consistent starter who doesn't break to pieces
all the time. Having him roll out is a good
idea...one that Jordan never considered because
of his hairdresse belief the the poor guy was
just a perfect pocket QB. He isn't. Too tiny and
    not nimble enough."
