Hypocrisy and Persecutions
While the Pharisees went to great lengths to
appear righteous because they desired the praise
of men (hypocrisy), the disciples would face a
similar but different temptation. They would
desire to avoid the anger and violence of the
crowds poured out on confessors of Christ. Just
as the Pharisees were hypocritical by attempting
to show off their righteousness, disciples of
Christ would be hypocritical by attempting to
disguise their righteousness and their
relationship to Christ in order to avoid
persecutions.

  • Why is opposition to the gospel, and to the godly
life which is to accompany it, to be expected?
  • Why should we suspect that hypocrisy (in regard

    Matt. 1026-27).
  • All truth, good or evil, will be revealed, so in
essence both a and b are true.

Summary Questions
  • Why is opposition to the gospel, and to the godly
life which is to accompany it, to be expected?
Light and darkness, truth and error,
    righteousness and unrighteousness.
  • Why should we suspect that hypocrisy will often
try to rear its ugly head in our lives? We do not
wish to be thought of as fools (1 Cor. 123-24)
we want to fit in we dont want to risk friendly
    relationships.
  • In what ways can hypocrisy of this kind be like
yeast (leaven)? Distorting the truth, keeping
    quiet, progressive error.
