UW, Madison has a new strategic plan
  • Promote research
  • Advance learning
  • Nurture human resources
  • Amplify the Wisconsin Idea
  • Accelerate Internationalization

3
At UW, DoIT, we identified a set of strategic
initiatives that will support the University plan.
  • Enable easy access to web-based services to
    support the Universitys instructional, research
    and administrative functions.
  • Advance the learning experience by integrating
technology both within and outside the classroom.

4
  • Provide easy access to data and information that
support the decision making needs of the
    University.
  • Support research and learning by evolving the
    network infrastructure and related security.

5
and
  • Provide outstanding applications that support the
academic and administrative functions of the
University in partnership with the University
    departments.
  • Develop a culture of customer service excellence
to support the information technology functions.

6
  • We are at work on all of these, at the same time
as we are developing a plan to support each
    initiative.
  • Our first initiative, enable easy access to web
based services, is being used as an umbrella for
components of each of the other initiatives. It
is driving some of our middleware work.

7
  • Integrated web based services, in my mind, are
    the transformative technology for higher
education during this five year period.
  • Check out the thinking of Ed Lightfoot from the
University of Washington in Seattle. (The other
    UW).

  • The challenge isnt what services can we provide
in a personalized, web based, portal
    environment.
  • The challenge is, which of the many electronic
services that we do provide, shall we integrate
    first.

10
  • We have about 7000 students with access to My-UW
    Madison right now.
  • November 1, we made the product available to the
balance of the student body, 38,000 more
    students.
  • A subset of that 38,000 will pilot web course
enrollment that is being incorporated in the
    portal starting November 16.

11
  • My-UW Madison provides access to the campus
calendar and integration of events on your
personal calendar - Corporate Time from Steltor.
  • It includes a web based e-mail application
-I-Planets e-mail which will come up before the
    end of year.

12
  • It includes web course enrollment which we hope
to make live for all students after the first of
    the year.
  • Students can ask what if questions regarding
    their course selection (DARS-What-If).
  • Students can check their bursar bill and their
    financial aid status.
  • It provides direct access to web based courses
    and course materials.

13
We call this thing
14
Spring semester
  • Faculty and staff will become part of the
    thing.
  • By the way, for the longest time we called the
    thing e-whatever.
  • The e-cat (campus advisory committee) is
identifying and selecting the components to
integrate for the faculty staff component.

15
Major challenges
  • Roles definition - we are doing it a-role-at-a
    -time.
  • Single sign on - are our apps ready and willing?
  • How many things can/should a campus have? This
    one is political.
  • Access to technology - this has to be ubiquitous.
  • And the accessibility issue.

16
Things we are driving
  • Middleware - certainly our directory and security
services, but again, the answers are coming as we
    move along.
  • Integration - this is bigger than a breadbox,
bigger than a volkswagon, bigger than a mac
truck, bigger than a We are the system
integrators. This is a most complex job.
  • The campus network - it has to be good all over
    for this to make sense.
  • More wireless and the handheld stuff.

17
Is this transformative?
  • I think so -
  • It is already changing the way that many folks on
campus think about and do their work.
  • It supports the chancellors concerns about a
    user friendly campus.
  • Big hunks of the campus are asking how they can
do their work to be a part of this - and thats
more collaboration than we have seen in a long
    time.

18
Do we know what it will look like in three years?
  • Nope.
  • We hardly know what it will look like in three
    months.
  • The technology is evolving.
  • The community is figuring out how to take
    advantage of it (in community).
  • And we are figuring out how to provide the
    infrastructure and support.

19
Predict the future.
  • Nope-
  • But-
  • Provide opportunities for our Universities to
take advantage of the great technology that we
can see and touch to support the Universities
strategic initiatives and to make a difference in
    the future.
