The Title of The Course

• The Politics of Globalisation
• Different aspects of Globalisation simultaneously
  political, economic and cultural
• For example, consumption has a cultural meaning
• Think of the course as the Cultural Political
  Economy of Globalisation

The Object of Analysis

• Primarily a study of a process not a institution.
• Primary objective of the course is to define what
  the object of analyse is.

Preliminary Notes on What Globalisation is

• There is no broad agreement as to what
  Globalisation is or even if the term has any
  descriptive or analytical meaning
• In so far as there is any agreement, the study of
  globalisation is the study of the transformation
  of space and time. Of different forms of
  time-space compression

• Time and Space clearly have a asocial physical
  existence but how we conceive of them is socially
  determined and constantly evolving
• It is obvious how the Internet has transformed
  understand of space and time
• Equally the social construction of the meaning of
  different segments of time becomes obvious when
  we look at a issue such as shop opening times
