  • To become an effective note taker there are
    several skills required
  • 1. Know what to write down and what NOT to write
    down
  • 2. Be able to listen to what the teacher says and
    write it down at the same time.
  • 3. Learn how to use abbreviations
  • 4. Know what to do with notes after taking them

  • Cornell style notes have been used in law schools
    for many years.
  • Law students brief cases on Legal-Lined
    notebook paper following this specific format.

How Do I Begin?
  • Fold your paper in half, length wise.
  • Then, fold the bottom portion of the paper about
    a quarter ways up.

Format For Cornell Notes
  • On the upper left hand of the page write the
    following
  • Topic____________
  • Questions or Main Idea(s)
  • In the upper right hand side write the following
  • Name, Class, Period, and Date
  • Underneath the heading, write Notes

And the bottom Section?
  • Write the following information on the bottom
    section of your paper.
  • - Summary

Now What?
  • Consider the right hand column the place for
    specific information
  • While taking notes, write in the right hand
    column
  • Use abbreviations
  • Paraphrase to capture content but simplify
    writing
  • Use symbols or highlight important information,
    ideas/words that are unclear, relationships
    between ideas/information
  • Include graphics when relevant
  • Skip lines between ideas.

  • Consider the left hand column the place for study
    questions and main ideas.
  • Within 24 hours or what is required by the
    teacher, develop study questions and identify
    main ideas about specifics in right hand column
    write study questions/main ideas in the left hand
    column.
