4European Agency for Safety and Health at Work
- every three and a half minutes, somebody in the
European Union dies from work-related causes - every year, 142,400 people in the EU die from
occupational diseases and 8,900 from work-related
accidents - up to a third of these 150,000 fatalities each
year can be attributed to hazardous substances at
work in the EU, including 21,000 to asbestos.
5International Labour Organisation
- occupational injury
- any personal injury, disease or death resulting
from an occupational accident an occupational
injury is therefore distinct from an occupational
disease, which is a disease contracted as a
result of an exposure over a period of time to
risk factors arising from work activity - Table 8A - Cases of occupational injury with lost
workdays, by economic activity - Fatal cases cases where workers were fatally
injured as a result of occupational accidents,

tics
- AgricultureThe fatal accident rate for the old
EU 15 member States is 12.6 per 100 000 workers
for accidents with more than three days absence,
the rate is more than 6,000 per 100 000 workers.
These are some of the highest rates for any
industry. In the old Member States just 4 of the
working population work in agriculture, but in
the new Member States it is 13.4. - ConstructionAround 1,300 workers are killed each
year, equivalent to 13 employees out of every
100,000 more than twice the average of other
sectors.
