How many in the UK?
  • 60 million people in UK- 9 million estimated to
    have some form of hearing loss
  • About 123,000 are Deafened people
  • Between 50,000-70,000 are BSL Users (approx
    125,000 use BSL)
  • How many CODAs? Nobody knows!

Aim of Project?
  • Find out how many CODAs there are in Kent
    (County).
  • Find out what support CODA children or youths
    need/want.
  • Give Support Reduce isolation through website,
    mobile text
  • and events.

  • Understand their rights needs
  • Provide Information
  • Break down communication barriers
  • Meet others in the same situation
  • Have some fun!

Why do CODAs need support?
  • Many reasons! Heres a few
  • CODAs absorb the problems of their parents. Why?
    Often used as interpreters.
  • Some CODAs feel guilty they know more than their
    parents.
  • Some act like they are the parent!
  • Some have difficulty with English- BSL is their
    first language.

What is it like to be a CODA?
  • A CODA can feel different to their peers as they
    live between two cultures, Deaf and hearing.
  • Impacts on them

  • Family/relationships
  • Every day life
  • Confidence/self esteem
  • Other maybe bullying?
