History
  • A Scottish Framework for Nursing in Schools
    identified the need for a National School Health
    Profiling Tool.
  • A partnership between NHS Health Scotland, the
    Scottish Executive and the Scottish Health
    Promoting Schools Unit (SHPSU) worked together to
    take forward recommendations for a national
    profiling tool.

Process
  • A national mapping exercise was carried out to
    find existing Profiling Tools and/or models of
    good practice
  • Extensive research of Profiling Tools both within
    Britain and abroad
  • Liaison with key personnel
  • Engaged with all interested parties

  • The Tool is underpinned by the principles of
  • The Health Promoting School paying particular
    attention to the values, aims and objectives in
    Being Well - Doing Well (2004)
  • Partnership Working
  • Inclusive Health Planning to ensure all
    children and young people have equal access and
    opportunity

    services and facilitate ease of access to both
    information and resources
  • Ambitious, excellent schools working together,
    local authorities, head teachers, teachers,
    parents and pupils can, and do achieve great
    results.

Definition of a School Health Profile
  • An effective School Health Profile should take
    the pulse of the school community in its widest
    sense, and give a clear and concise picture of
    the school and the community within which it sits.

    priorities within the school community
  • Identify agreed outcomes for collaborative action
  • Facilitate effective partnership working
  • Facilitate effective workforce and resource
    planning which should be integrated into the
    planning structure of the school

  • Include educational personnel and key partners in
    school developments
  • Compile information regarding current school
    practices, services and activities
  • Utilise existing data
  • Enable the sharing of information in an
    appropriate and meaningful way

Why is School Health Profiling important?
  • It provides an opportunity for practitioners to
    explore and identify priorities and subsequently,
    inform service provision
  • Profiling encourages the school community to take
    account of local and national priorities e.g.
    Health Promoting School agenda
  • It should put the school into a community context
  • Consolidation of key initiatives and local
    targets to explore and identify priorities and
    inform service provision

  • The tool incorporates both quantitative and
    qualitative data
  • School community information where the school
    sits within its community local facilities
    area of economic deprivation etc.
  • Support Needs of Children and Young People
    pupils with additional support needs pupils
    seen by CAMHS pupils entitled to free school
    meals and subsequent uptake of free school meals

Pre-test and Pilot Phase
  • Pre-testing of Profiling Tool and Guidance
