Introduction
  • The HCAI Technology Innovation Programme launched
    in January 2008, following Clean, Safe Care
    Reducing Infection and Saving Lives (DoH, 2008).

  • Led by NHS PASA as part of the HCAI Technology
    Programme
  • Products implemented in SH June 2008
  • 7 Showcase Hospitals across England
  • In-use evaluations of six RRP1 products
    initially

Rapid Review Panel
  • A group of internationally recognised scientists
    and practitioners who meet four times each year
    to review evidence submitted by firms who seek to
    demonstrate that their technologies will reduce
    infection, not just kill bugs!
  • Convened by the HPA at the request of the DH and
    reports to the DH through Professor Duerden,
    Chief Inspector of Microbiology.
  • Set up in 2004 and has since reviewed 200
    technologies/products and makes awards in one of
    seven categories depending on the evidence.

Aims of the project
  • Overall aim is to speed up the development and
    NHS adoption of new proven technologies to reduce
    HCAIs.

    implementations

  • PVC, CVC insertion line care, Blood cultures
  • Company trainer undertook compliance check approx
    8 weeks following installation with a further
    follow up planned next week
  • New doctors-encourage use!

Bioquell
  • Managed service commenced 21/7/08 for four
    months.
  • 225 process to date - Side rooms, bays, ward and
    other areas.(21/7/08-14/11/08)
  • Positive feedback from staff and patients so far
    (minimal disruption).
  • Utilise it (non side room activity).
  • Proactive engineers.

ATP monitoring, 3M Cleantrace
  • 4 wards, 20 test points on each ward, 7 days a
    week.
  • Generally sustained improvement.
  • Competition between areas! Improved dialogue
    between domestic and nursing staff.
  • Improved software from 3M to enable effective
    feedback.

Bard Silver coated urinary catheters
  • Prevalence study- 4 weeks pre and post change of
    catheters
  • Four month period of use.(12,14,16ch-to replace
    standard short term catheter use).
  • Bard visited clinical areas prior to change over.

  • General use increasing slowly as more general
    staff receive training.
  • Mostly positive feedback. simple to use....no
    problems...aided skin integrity...dignity and
    comfort for the patient.
  • Kits and consumables available from Medical
    Equipment Library (sign out sheet).
  • Evaluation forms attached to kits, complete and
    return. Patient feedback.

    showcase period, blood culture contaminant rates.
