  • Each facility has an evacuation plan posted in
    the hallways
  • Upon learning the facility LOOK at the evacuation
    plan to know where to locate
  • Exits
  • Extinguishers
  • Fire alarms
  • Oxygen shut off valves
  • Fire doors

Fire Doors?
  • Fire doors are solid doors that separate areas of
    the hospital and contain a fire to one smaller
    area
  • They are usually in corridors and close
    automatically when an alarm is activated
  • Fire doors should always remain unobstructed so
    they can close!
  • Be sure no wheelchairs, etc in the path of the
    door

What to Do
  • Upon the detection of smoke or fire
  • Follow the RACE plan

R-A-C-E
  • Rescue
  • Rescue/Remove person(s) from the immediate fire
    scene/room.
  • Alert
  • Alert personnel by activating the nearest fire
    alarm pull station and call the facility operator
    to report the exact location of the fire.
  • Confine
  • Confine fire and smoke by closing all doors in
    the area.
  • Extinguish
  • Extinguish a small fire by using a portable fire
    extinguisher or use to escape from a large fire.
  • Evacuate the area immediately
  • This may mean to another corridor, on the other
    side of fire doors or out an exit depending on
    the patients location (check evacuation plan in
    facility)

Activate RACE before using an extinguisher
  • Fire extinguishers used on the medical campus are
    only to be used after the R-A-C-E fire plan has
    been followed.
  • All personnel should know the location and types
    of fire extinguishers in their area and know
    howto use them.

P-A-S-S is used to describe the four-step process
in operating a fire extinguisher.
  • Pull
  • Pull the safety pin on the extinguisher.
  • Aim
  • Aim the hose of the extinguisher at the base of
    the fire.
  • Squeeze
  • Squeeze the handle to discharge the material.
  • Sweep
  • Sweep the hose across the base of the fire from
    side to side.
