LifeCare Solutions Home Oxygen Systems
Gas Oxygen Cylinder-- Stationary -Cylinder gas is
used as back-up for patients with a
concentrator. -An (H) cylinder will last about 40
hours at 2 liters per minute. -Sometimes used
on pediatric patients with low liter flow. Gas
Oxygen Cylinder-- Portable -The most common form
of portable gas. Most common cylinder is an E
cylinder with a rolling cart which weighs 12 to
15 lbs. -E cylinders are intended for patients
who leave home 1-3 times per week. Gas Oxygen
with Conserving Device (OCD) -An OCD is for
patients who are active use cylinder gas. -Two
types of Conserving Devices (OCD) 1) Conserving
Devices deliver a measure puff of O2 at set
rates. 2) Demand Devices deliver O2 at the onset
of inspiration. -Patients will generally use
small cylinders that weigh 8 to10 lbs with
OCDs. -An oximetry study is recommended if
considering a conserving device to insure
adequate saturation. -There are over 30
different OCD devices on the market. Each
device uses a unique delivery algorithm. LCS
can offer insight into which device is
appropriate.
  • Oxygen Concentrator
  • -Filters nitrogen from room air to deliver
    oxygen.
  • -Plugs into the wall outlet, uses home
    electricity and never requires refills.
  • -Provides 95 pure oxygen.
  • Some concentrators have monitors that alarm if
the purity of oxygen drops below acceptable
    levels.
  • -Can incorporate alarms in the event of a power
    failure.
  • -Maximum liter flow with an oxygen concentrator
    is 5 liters per minute.
  • -Back up cylinder oxygen is required in the event
    of power or equipment failure.
  • 70 of oxygen patients have an oxygen
    concentrator.
  • -Concentrators are the most commonly used
    delivery option.

Liquid Oxygen (LOX) -Stores cooled liquid oxygen
under pressure. -Patients fill a portable unit
from the stationary. -A Lox portable weighs 4 to
9 lbs. and is the primary oxygen source.
-Liquid oxygen is warmed to a gas, and delivered
at slightly below room temperature. -A small
amount of liquid O2 provides 250 times its volume
in breathable gas at 100 purity. -Lox Portable
is small and long lasting. -Lox is best used for
patients who are moderately to heavily active.
