Title: Contemporary Designs for Curriculum Development
1Contemporary Designs for Curriculum Development
2Contemporary Designs for Curriculum Development
- As we have read and discussed in previous
classes, our current CTE system is very complex.
Curriculum developers are currently using designs
to consider and counteract potential problems in
this complex system.
3A Systems View of Curriculum Development
- Helps curriculum developers design curriculum
that is relevant. - Allows us to look at the big picture and give
consideration to a multitude of curriculum
related factors.
4What is a system?
- an organized way of doing something
- a collection of elements, interacting with each
other to achieve a common goal - Finch and Crunkilton (1999), Curriculum
Development in Vocational and Technical
Education, Needham Heights, MA., p.26.
5Systems Model for Performance Improvement
6What are the parts of a system?
- Environment- context within which the system
operates-in some cases the environment may put
constraints on a system - Feedback- provides results of the output so it
can be compared to the desired output -
7What are the parts of a system?
- Inputs- that which enters the system form the
environment - Output- product of the system returned to the
environment - Process- sub-processes in the system that act on
input and transfer it to output
8This is an example of how a systems approach can
be applied and used to explain a high school
agricultural education program.
Environment ( School, Community, Business,
Industry, Government, Etc.)
PROCESS (Program)
Output- Program Graduates
Input- Students
Feedback

9 What are models?
- A simplified yet communicable representation of
a real-world setting or situation. - Finch and Crunkilton (1999), Curriculum
Development in Vocational and Technical
Education, Needham Heights, MA., p.29.
10Models
- Communicate in several ways
- Systemically
- Procedurally
- Conceptually
- Some Models are Systems Some Systems are
Models. - Use definitions to decipher.
