Mexico and Texas

• Mexico controlled most of what we now know as
  Texas and California.
• Settlers from America moved into Texas and formed
  the Republic of Texas.
• Disputes arose over the Mexico/US border, and war
  erupted.

• Led by Stephen Austin, Americans began moving to
  Texas in the 1820s.
• Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836.

• 1846, President James K. Polk declared war on
  Mexico due to the border disputes.
• Mexico loses, border established for Texas at the
  Rio Grande River.
• Mexico gave California and the area of New Mexico
  to the US.
• US gave Mexico 15 million.
