Introduction

• These roadside markers are important to Winnipeg
  because they mark parts of the city which
  represent significant history.

Oakdale Park

• Built by George A. Glines and Co.
• On Lot 24 in St. James, on Portage Ave.
• Built in 1903
• Five pillars in total
• 2 at Overdale, 2 at Winchester, and 1 at Linwood
  Avenues
• In 1948, Winchester was removed
• The eastern pillar was re-built

This is a picture of the pillar in Overdale Ave.

Birchwood Heights

• Built by Lount Construction Co. and Borger
  Development Co.
• On lots 12-15 in St. James, on Portage Ave.
• Placed between Vernon and Lake Streets
• In 1958, a pillar was put up at the southwest
  corner of Portage Ave and Assiniboine Crescent

Woodhaven

• Built by Harrison and OKelly
• On Lots 7 and 8 on Portage Ave
• Built in September, 1913
• Placed on the southwest corner of Portage Ave.
• Pillars existed for about 33 years
• By 1953, pillars knocked down
• In September 10, 1960, a pillar was put up

This is the pillar in Woodhaven.

Silver Heights

• Built by John Rowand Jr on Lots 18-20 in St.
  James, on Portage Ave
• Began building in 1856
• On November 24, 1892, Silver Heights destroyed by
  fire but not entirely
• 175 acress of it became the Winnepeg
  International Airport
• The rests was transferred to St. James

This is the pillar at Silver Heights.

The Winnipeg Cenotaph

• Built by Gilbert Parfitt
• It was designed in memory of the people who died
  in the WWI
• On November 11, 1928, the Cenotaph was put up

This is the Winnipeg Cenotaph.

The Womens Tri-Service Statue

• Built by Helen Granger Young
• Located on Memorial Boulevard
• Built in memory of the women who served Canada
  and the British Army during WWI
• Five and a half foot statue
• Represents three former separate services the
  Army, the Navy, and the Air Force

This is a picture of The Womens Tri-Service
Monument.
