8INCREASES TO PRIOR BUDGET
Need to Retool Data Recorders
- Present equipment is old technology with
minimal flexibility for upgrade.
- Repair frequency increasing, and will no
longer be supported by manufacturer.
- Present equipment has been well used with
most units having 10 years of service.
- Need to replace all units for efficient
transition
9INCREASES TO PRIOR BUDGET
- Need for Additional CWT Detection Wands
- Budget accounts for purchasing two wands in first
year of renewed contract and one wand in each
following year. - Current wands have been in the field since 1999
season, and repair frequency is increasing (10
returned for repair prior to 2002 selective
fishery start out of 22 total). - Not enough wands currently to address mass marked
chinook issues (2001 No Tag rate of 26).
10INCREASES TO PRIOR BUDGET
- Longer Seasons Require More Seasonal Time
- Commercial and recreational ocean fisheries have
opened in April since 1997. - In 2002, commercial troll seasons opened in
March. - Appears that a Mid-March opening date is likely
for commercial salmon, and April 1 for
recreational in the near future. - Recreational season length in most recent 3
years on the central Oregon Coast has more
than doubled the 20 year average season length
from 1979-1998.
