Satellite

• Recent years have seen a growth in use of Ka-band
  (spot beam) satellite technology
• Anik F2 was launched in July of 2004
• Current North American offerings ranging from 512
  Kbps to 2 Mbps
• Feb 25, 2008 Japan launched Kizuna
• Download speeds of 155 Mbps and 6 Mbps upload to
  the home

• Although speeds are increasing, satellite
  solutions can not overcome the physics which
  cause significant latency
• Approximately 250 ms delay inherent in the path

Terrestrial Based Solutions

• Copper Based Solutions
• Traditional Telcos are driving their fibre deeper
  into their network to enable ADSL2, ADSL2 and
  VDSL2 for both data and video applications
• Speeds of up to 8 Mbps, 24 Mbps and 100 Mbps
  respectively

• Coaxial Cable Based Solution
• Similar to the Telcos, the Cablecos are also
  pushing their fibre deeper into their networks
  and are looking at DOCSIS 3.0 standards to
  deliver higher speed data for the traditional
• Speeds up to 160 Mbps

• Fibre to the Home( FTTH), Passive Optical
  Networks (PON)
• At this stage FTTH is the ultimate bandwidth
  solution providing significant scalability
  benefits
• Limited deployment in Canada too date
• Verizon, in the US, is a leader in delivering its
  FioS service (FTTH service)
• Speeds of up to 50 Mbps to the user currently
  available

• Terrestrial based solutions assume that you have
  some type of infrastructure to begin with,
  otherwise costs to deploy become excessive

Wireless Solutions

• WiFi (Wireless Hotspots) (IEEE 802.11n)
• More applicable to Wireless LAN environment as
  range is extremely limited (25 30 m indoors and
  300 m outdoors)

• Raw data speeds reaching greater than 500 Mbps by
  year-end
• WiMAX (IEEE 802.16)
• Key benefit over previous wireless technology is
  capability to deliver solution in non line of
  sight (NLOS) environment
• Range of 6-8 km in NLOS environment and up to 16
  km in LOS environment
