Title: Studying the Universe
1Studying the Universe
2Astronomy
- The study of all physical objects beyond the
Earth.
Explanation Perhaps it's time to go inside. Such
thoughts might occur to people witnessing the
approach of an impressive shelf cloud. Shelf
clouds are typically seen leading thunderstorms,
although they may precede any well defined front
of relatively cold air. Shelf clouds differ from
roll clouds because shelf clouds are attached to
a larger cloud system lurking above. Similarly,
shelf clouds differ from wall clouds because wall
clouds typically trail storm systems. The above
pictured shelf cloud was photographed toward the
southwest during a trip crossing the prairies of
Saskatchewan, Canada on the Trans-Canada Highway
in 2001 August. A rising Sun illuminated the
impressive cloud from the east as it advanced
from the west.
3Orions Cradle
4Universe
- Consists of all space and matter
- Cosmology is the study of the origin, structure,
and future of the universe
5Time
- Our calendar is based on the movements of the
Earth, Sun and Moon.
6Celestial Movements
- Rotate- to spin on an imaginary axis in one
complete turn. - Revolution- to move around another body in one
complete path.
7Which picture demonstrates revolution and
rotation?
A
B
8Year
9Year
- The time it takes the Earth to REVOLVE once
around the Sun. (365.242 days)
10Moon REVOLVING around Earth
11Month
- roughly the time it takes the moon to REVOLVE
around the Earth.
12Day
- the time it takes the Earth to ROTATE once on its
axis. - A calendar year is 365 days. However, every
fourth year adds a day to the calendar that makes
up for the (.242) day to keep the seasons
occurring in the same months.

- The ____ is an imaginary circle created by
extending the Earth's equator into space. - To spin around an axis describes what occurance?
- Days are the rotation or revolution around the
sun? - What is a year?
