- This is the policy where we
- Establish our rules for foods on WIC (marketing,
availability, additives, etc). - Present the USDA parameters for allowable
foods-milk (Vit D) or cereal (sugar and iron) - Define whats in each of the 7 WIC food packages
8Whats different from the past?
- New foods- whole wheat bread, canned beans, fresh
fruits and vegetables - Different amounts of food items for various
groups - Elimination of some foods (46 oz juice, infant
juice, 2 cheese, some cereals and lt18 oz peanut
butter) - An expectation that the full food package is
always offered

13Infants 0-5 months- Fd Pkg 1
- Infant formula is the only category of
supplemental food in the package - One can of formula for mostly BF infant
Infants 6-11 months- Fd Pkg 2
- Again formula plus cereal
- Formula amounts change based on BF Status and on
age of infant - New baby fruit and vegetables
- New baby meats for fully breastfed
14Special Food Packages- Fd Pkg III
- The package for all (W, I, and C) if they have a
medical condition requiring special formula - And if prescribed, all of the other food they
would be entitled to - Medical documentation for recognized conditions
- Use if you need more cheese, whole milk for
children gt2 and underweight women
15Children- Fd Pkg IV
- Only 1 pound of cheese- thats the max
- Whole milk only for 1-2 year olds
- 2, 1 or skim for children over 2 years
- Milk will be specified on the check
- Soy and more cheese, with a qualifying medical
condition - New whole grain option (2), CVV
- 1 Less milk and 2 juice than in past
16Pregnant and partially breastfeeding women up to
1 year- Fd Pkg V
- Lower fat milk choices only (2, 1, skim)
- Soy beverage may be substituted for cows milk
- 1 pound of cheese only (more if qualifying
medical condition) - Whole grain option (1) and CVV
- Less milk and juice
17Non-breastfeeding delivered women- Fd Pkg VI
- Lower fat milk choices only
- Soy beverage may be substituted for cows milk
- 1 pound of cheese only (more if qualifying
medical condition) - No bread with this package

medical condition) - Tuna and salmon option, whole grain and CVV
- More food (alternate between 2 months to better
accommodate the food amounts - Less juice and milk than in past

- A non-contract infant formula is defined as the
iron fortified milk based, milk based without
lactose, and soy based infant formulas not
covered by the ND infant formula rebates.

Staff may issue one can of powdered formula to
mostly breastfed infants during the first month
of life if determined appropriate during the
CPAs assessment. Allowable conditions for
issuance Maternal medical
indications Infant medical indications Non-medical
reasons Need to document why one can of formula
was provided in the participants record (food
package comments or care plan) in WICnet
24Categorical Eligibility 04-01-02
- Breastfeeding women who receive no supplemental
foods but whose breastfed infant receives
supplemental food are considered WIC
participants.
25Quick review on policy changes
- New foods and new amounts of foods
- Milk- whole only for 1-2 year olds, but for all
older children and women, 2, 1 or skim only. - Type of milk now specified on the check
- 1 pound of cheese is the maximum
- When you give less than the full amount of food
the participant is entitled to, you need to
document why. - If you give the partially BF infant that one can
of formula that first month, document why
