Explorer Biography
  • He was born in Sines,Portugal and attended school
    in the town of Evora. He learned astronomy and
    navigation.
  • He became a navel officer in 1492 and commanded
    ships along the coast of Portugal.
  • King Manuel of Portugal, asked him to find a sea
    route to Asia. Da Gamas father was asked to
    lead, but he died shortly before.
  • When Da Gama arrived in India in 1524, he soon
    died ,it was Christmas Eve. He was 55.

Purpose of Journey
  • Vasco da Gama sailed to India to trade for spices
    and riches. King Manuel paid for the journey.
  • Da Gama sailed with four ships with each ship
    having six anchors. He had a crew of 170 men and
    his equipment included compasses, astrolabe,
    astronomical charts, guns, crossbows,
    javelins,pikes, and spears.

The Journey
  • He sailed from Lisbon, Portugal on July 8, 1497.
    He rounded the Cape of Good Hope , on Nov. 22. He
    stopped at trading posts that are now
    Mocambique,Mombassa, Mozambique,Melinda, and
    Kenya.

Encounter with Natives
  • Arab traders in Mocambique and Mombassa hated the
    Portuguese and tried to seize their ships. But
    the people in Melinda were friendlier and
    arranged for a guide to lead the fleet to India.
  • On May 20,1498 Da Gama reached Calicut, India.
    The gifts Da Gama brought insulted the Indian
    ruler, plus Muslim merchants that controlled
    trade in Calicut were resenting European
    inference with their business. They threatened
    them and would not trade.

Results of the Exploration
  • When Da Gama first sailed to India they couldnt
    get the Indians to trade with them. When others
    followed Da Gamas route they succeeded.
  • When Da Gama returned home in 1499, he became
    Aderimal of Sea to India.

Conclusion
  • Vasco da Gama was the first to follow Bartholomew
    Diaz route The Portuguese had searched for a
    route to Asia for 60 years. Da Gama sailed to
    India to trade for riches and spices. The route
    he took became a highway to riches!!!
