  • Historians call the four emperors who ruled from
    CE 14-68 the Julians because in some way they
    were all related to Julius Caesar.

  • Each showed promise at the beginning but
    eventually would have great faults.

  • Augustus was succeed by his adopted son Tiberius.
  • Tiberius would go on to spoil his able leadership
    by accusing innocent people of treason against
    him.

  • Caligula was Tiberiuss grandnephew.
  • He would be assassinated by one of his own men.

    having a severe illness.

    scholar was full of good and fresh ideas.
  • However, as he grew older he had difficulty
    focusing on the affairs of the state.

  • After Cladius was his stepson Nero.
  • Nero was considered cruel, vain, and probably
    insane.

  • It is believed that Nero was willing to bankrupt
    Rome to pay for his own personal pleasures.

    senators put to death.

    committing crimes against the state.

    new emperors rose to power.
  • Each would have their own flaws and would commit
    crimes against Rome.
  • However, Rome continued to prosper.

  • In 96 CE, the Senate chose its own new emperor.
  • His name was Nerva and he was considered the
    first of the so called Good Emperors.

  • Emperor Trajan increased Rome to its greatest
    size.
  • Hadrian then strengthened Rome's fortifications.

  • Antoninus Pius succeed Hadrian, and he maintained
    the empires prosperity.

  • Then Marcus Aurelius, considered a great
    philosopher, brought the empire to the height of
    economic prosperity.

  • All these Good Emperors ruled according to the
    system created by Augustus and lived by the Roman
    values.
