Title: Metadata in The European Library: current status, future developments
1Metadata in The European Library current
status, future developments
- Sally Chambers
- The European Library Office
EDLproject Workshop, National Library of
Austria, 27th and 28th November, 2006
2Background
- Importance of metadata interoperability for the
development of a european digital library - EDL project (WP1, task 4) first step towards
metadata interoperability - Building on how metadata has been standardised
within The European Library - Can TEL metadata models be extended to allow
interoperability between other types of metadata?
3Introduction
- What types of metadata are used in The European
Library? - How is this metadata used within The European
Library? - How is this metadata managed?
- Can these management models be extended to
metadata from eContentplus projects?
4Metadata in The European Library
- Two types of metadata in The European Library
- Metadata about the collection itself
- Collection level descriptions
- Metadata about the objects themselves Metadata
records / object level metadata
5Collections metadata
- Help users to select collections
- e.g. title, description logo of the collection
- Available in multiple languages
- Standardised
- TEL Application Profile for Collections
- NISO Collection Description Specification
- Submitted / edited via a web form
- Stored in XML format
6Help users to select collections
- Encourage users to select collections with
relevant content before searching - Optimal searching up to 15 collections
- Browse collections by subject
- Search collections by description
- Browse all collections
7Collection title, description logo
8Available in multiple languages
9Standards
- TEL Application Profile for Collections
- NISO Collection Description Specification

17Collection metadata questions
- Do you have collections?
- Do you already have metadata descriptions of your
collections? - How do you store your collection descriptions?
- What collection description standards do you use?
18Objects metadata
- The EL portal searches the local databases of
partner libraries - Or records harvested into central index
- Metadata records converted to TEL Application
Profile for objects - The metadata records can then be displayed in The
European Library - Provide access to the digital item or object
- Link to record in native interface

26Objects metadata questions
- Do you have objects?
- Do you already have metadata records for these
objects? - What metadata format are these records in?
- Can you provide individual URLs for these
objects?
27Managing Metadata
- The European Library Application Profiles
developed during the TEL project - Based on Dublin Core Libraries Application
Profile (DC-Lib) - Two TEL application profiles
- TEL AP for collections
- TEL AP for objects
- All terms stored and described in The European
Library Metadata Registry
28The TEL Metadata Registry
- Place to store all the terms used in both
application profiles - Place to describe the terms
- Place to provide guidance on how they may be used
- Application Profiles are not static need to be
reviewed and updated - Development process part of registry
- Managed by the TEL Metadata Working Group
29The TEL Metadata Registry
30Extending the TEL Metadata Registry
- Need for metadata from eContentplus projects
interoperable - Move towards the development of a european
digital library - Initial research is being undertaken as part of
EDLproject (WP1, task 4) www.edlproject.eu - Extend the TEL Metadata Registry to include
metadata elements for eContentplus collections.
31Extending the TEL Metadata Registry
- Working with content partners from other
eContentplus funded projects??? - Investigate metadata formats currently used in
these projects. - Map metadata elements onto the TEL Application
Profiles. - Add additional elements as required.
- Pilot providing access to non-library collection
via the EDLproject test portal. - Moving towards the development of a European
Metadata Registry
