The village from start to now...
  • Originated in 1956, as a historical site owned
    by Ernest Walter Wilson
  • Contained only one buildingthe courthouse
  • In 1977, Dr. R. Lee Rode took ownership of the
    village
  • The village had 3 buildings by now
  • Dr. Rode continued to purchase buildings and
    move them to the
  • village
  • The village was acquired in 1999 by the Grady
    McWhiney Research
  • Foundation
  • The village currently contains over a dozen
    original structures from
  • dating from 1875 to 1925, along with
    thousands of artifacts

What makes the village unique?
  • Walk the village at your own pace
  • The village is set up in 3 time periods 1880,
    1905, 1925
  • Enjoy the nice sunny days in Texas as you walk
    from
  • building to building.
  • Summer weekends are filled with living history
    events. Meet
  • interpreters in first person from the time
    period for that weekend.
  • Who loves baseball? The village sponsors a
    pre-1898 baseball team.

So what buildings are avalible for tour?

The Nazerene Church
  • Built in 1906 and moved to the Village in 1977
    by Dr. Rode
  • The original congregation was formed in 1898 as
    part of the Holiness Movement that swept the
    South at the end of the century, and was home to
    the ministry of Mary Lee Cagle.
  • It is one of the first Nazarene Churches in
    Texas.
  • Locally known as the Sweet Church
  • Honey bees have taken up home within the church
    and have not been able to be removed
  • Still used for weddings private services

The Buffalo Gap Mercantile / Texas History Store
  • Started out as a baggage depot for the Texas
    Pacific Railroad at Clyde in 1910.
  • The building is now the home of the Texas
    History Store.
  • The store contains a selection of Texas history
    replicas for sale
  • The store also has many History books for sale,
    including books from the McWhiney Foundation
    Press.

The Old Ovalo Store
  • Built in the 1980s
  • Was a general store located in Ovalo, Texas
  • Now the building is part of the Texas History
    Store at the Village

First Taylor County Courthouse Jail
  • Constructed during 1879 and 1880.
  • Served Taylor County until the seat was moved in
    1883 to Abilene, Texas.
  • The Courthouse is currently the home of Indian
    Artifacts Gun Collection.

Marshall Tom Hill House
  • Built in 1881
  • Home of the first Abilene Marshall
  • It is the only remaining structure of box
    construction left in Taylor County
  • Contains unique period furniture

The Knight/Sayles Cabin
  • Built in 1875, out of native cedar wood, by J.M.
    Knight
  • 6 out of Knights 13 children were raised in
    this 1 room cabin
  • Originally located 6 miles west

Doctor's Office
  • This building was a residential home built on
    this site during World War II.
  • It currently houses displays on medical and
    dental equipment from the early part of the 20th
    century.
