Title: Earths Resources
1Earths Resources
- 8.3.5 Summarize the importance of minerals, ores,
and fossil fuels as Earth resources on - the basis of their physical and chemical
properties.
2Earth resources (minerals, ores, and fossil
fuels) have properties that make them important
and useful.
3Properties that determine the usefulness of an
ore or mineral may be identified using a chart,
diagram or dichotomous key.
- The two types of properties are
- Physical properties for example, hardness,
luster, color, texture, the way a mineral splits,
or density - Chemical properties for example, the ability to
burn, the reactivity to acids
Lets look at some dichotomous keys!
4Minerals
- Natural, solid materials found on Earth that are
the building blocks of rock each has a certain
chemical makeup and set of properties that
determine their use and value.
5Minerals
- Watch a Brainpop video about Minerals.
Mineral Identification Is that a diamond or cubic
zirconia on your finger? After Tim and Moby
introduce you to the world of mineral
identification, youll never be fooled again! In
this BrainPOP movie, youll learn how to use the
physical properties of minerals to tell them
apart. Discover why its important to look not
just at color and hardness but also other
properties like luster, streak and even something
called cleavage! Youll learn about the different
scales used to measure mineral properties, and
why the only mineral that can mark up a diamond
is another diamond. Soon youll be ready to start
that rock collection (just dont leave them in
the living room)!
6Ores
- Minerals that are mined because they contain
useful metals or nonmetals.
Examples Copper and Lead Ore Copper metal Iron
Ores Lead metal Nickel metal Spathic Iron Ore Tin
metal Zinc metal
7Fossil Fuels
- Natural fuels that come from the remains of
living things fuels give off energy when they
are burned.
8Fossil Fuels
- Watch a Brainpop video about Fossils Fuels.
Fossil Fuels Fossil fuel thats what dinosaurs
used to power their cars, right? Wrong! So, what
are fossil fuels? In this BrainPOP movie, Tim and
Moby introduce you to fossil fuel energy sources
like natural gas, coal, and oil. Youll learn
how fossil fuels form and what we use these
important resources for. Find out about how
plants and animals from millions of years ago
helped create today's fossil fuels today. Well
also explain the down sides to using fossil
fuels. Oh, those fancy fossil fuels do so much!
