How to Increase Student Achievement
  • There are 3 critical ways to improve student
    achievement
  • Raise the level of instructional content for all
    students.
  • Increase the skill knowledge that teachers
    bring to teaching the content.
  • Increase students level of active learning of
    the content.

Indianas Statewide Mission
  • Produce a well educated citizenry competent and
    competitive in a global society.
  • Common goal for
  • Governor, Legislature, HE, Public Education,
    Foundations, Parent Groups, Business
    Industry, Work Force Services, all
    Stakeholders
  • In the late 80s, less than 39 of Indiana
    students went to college after HS graduation.
  • Core 40 efforts increased the rate to 64.

Higher Ed is Leading the Charge
  • Schools are being reconfigured into smaller
    learning schools with enrollment of approximately
    500.
  • The school design resembles a college campus.
  • Any student can attend a New Century HS.
    Transportation is provided from any point in the
    county to any of the schools.
  • Students have the opportunity to earn associate
    degrees accompanying their high school diploma.

Student Support
  • Counselors are counselors in the New Century
    high schools. The student to counselor ratio
    provides needed support.
  • A HE college advisor is assigned to the local
    site to provide additional support to students.
  • The school is open from 7-7 or 7-8 to provide
    tutoring, mentoring, and student support.
  • Tutoring and academic support is provided by
    licensed teachers during the day and until 700
    p.m.
  • On-line support is also available statewide.

Dual Enrollment
  • Dual enrollment, CC is the heart of the program.
  • On-line courses are provided.
  • TransferIn.net provides support and automatic
    transcripts for students to any college or
    university within the state.
  • HS graduation demands completion of the Core 40,
    assessments in Algebra 1, and English 10. (Core
    40 required for HS graduation in 2005 and for
    admission to HE in 2011.)
  • Diploma options- Technical Honors/Academic Honors

Finances for College as a Barrier
  • Twenty-first Century Scholars
  • Starts in the 8th grade with a commitment from
    the student.
  • Students may sign up in grades 6, 7, and 8.
  • Pledge to maintain a 2.0 GPA, no alcohol or
    drugs, do not get arrested, graduate from high
    school.
  • All 21st Century Students receive free tuition
    for an Indiana public or equivalent independent
    college or university.
  • Scholars are 58 first generation college
    students, 49 single-parent families with a
    median family income of 29,000.
  • Those unemployed are recycled into the
    educational system.

  • Indiana is now home to 20 Early College High
    Schools.
  • Ben Davis University High School
  • Dual Enrollment
  • Required to take Spanish and Content Reading
  • Arts PE completed before coming to Ben Davis
    in 9th grade
  • After-school clubs organized and managed by
    students
  • Business internships in community
  • One month required each summer on college
    campus living in dorms
  • All college, paid for as part of CC with
    eligibility for 21st Century schools, is based
    on poverty (free reduced lunch)
  • Campus under 500 10th 11th grade students,
    will become a school with10-12th graders
    (current enrollment 235)

  • Efforts are driven by HE the legislature.
  • Teacher Education targeted effort in producing
    STEM teachers for public ed.
  • Community comes into high schools in the evening
    to mentor and support counselors.

    Central High School enrollment of 3200.

    college for all students.
