AGFUND International Prize for Pioneering
Development Projects
2 Idea of the Prize
- AGFUND International Prize is an annual prize,
Warded by the Arab Gulf Program for United
Nations Development Organizations (AGFUND). It
is a financial reward of US 300 000, in addition
to trophies and certificates of recognition. - The idea of the Prize was emanated from the
keenness and continued endeavors of AGFUND to
contribute to developmental action in the
developing countries with the aim of alleviate
human suffering and pain.
3Objectives of the Prize
- - Supporting distinguished efforts aimed at
developing and promoting the concepts and
dimensions of sustainable human development. - Promoting developmental action on scientific
bases that could help it achieve its objectives. - Highlighting and enhancing pioneering efforts
which aims at establishing distinguished NGOs in
the developing countries. - Contributing to the achievement of AGFUND
strategic objectives.
4 Prize categories
AGFUND Prize is consisted of three categories in
accordance with the implementing bodies of the
nominated projects
First Category Prize For projects by UN,
international or regional organizations,
amounting to US150,000
Second Category Prize For projects by NGOs,
amounting to US100,000
Third Category Prize For projects by
individuals, amounting to US 50,000.
5Periodicity of the Prize
The Prize shall be awarded annually in a
ceremony, to which representatives of the winning
projects, experts and specialists in the field of
development and prominent world personalities
interested in development issues are invited.
6Committee of the Prize
- The Prize is supervised by a Prize Committee,
with the President of AGFUND as its Chairman and
membership of a select number of distinguished
international personalities concerned with
development issues, in whose selection world
geographical distribution is taken into
consideration. - HRH Prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz, President of
AGFUND, - Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al, Saudi Arabia, President of
the Islamic Development Bank, representing the
Arab Region. - Dr. Federico Mayor, Spain, Director-General of
UNESCO, representing Europe. - Professor Mohamed Yunus, Bangladesh, Managing
Director of Grameen Bank, representing Asia. - Dr. Y. Seyyid Abdulai, Nigeria, Director-General
of the Opec Fund for International Development,
representing Africa.
7Nomination for the Prize
Bodies Eligible to Nominate UN, international
and regional organizations shall be eligible to
nominate projects for the Prize, as well as
universities, research centres, NGOs and country
federations of NGOs.
8Nomination for the Prize
- Projects Eligible for Nomination
- Pioneering projects implemented by UN,
international or regional organizations. - Pioneering projects implemented by
non-governmental organizations. - Pioneering projects founded, sponsored or/ and
implemented by individuals.
9Arbitration
After screening the nominated projects, the
nominations that satisfy the Prize conditions are
sent to development experts specializing in each
of the three subjects of the Prize in order to
evaluate them in strict confidence. Results of
the referees reports are then submitted to the
Prize Committee for study and selection of the
winning projects. The winning projects are then
announced in the media, and official
notifications are sent to the concerned bodies.

Second Category Small and Micro Enterprise
Project implemented Egypt.
Third Category Barefoot Volunteers - Making a

The Initiative Prize Epilepsy Awareness
Campaign) implemented Saudi Arabia.

AGFUND Prize 2000
First Category TCE- Total Control of the
Epidemic implemented in Zimbabwe.
Second Category Information, Training and
Research Center for Mongolian Youth Development
implemented Mongolia.
Third Category The Prize Committee has decided
to withhold the third category prize for the year
2000 due to the fact that the nominated projects
were not of standard sufficient to justify its
award.
