Earth

Once upon a time, in the village of Ballston Spa,
there lived a curious little Scottie dog named
Milton.
Milton loved to learn. Everywhere he went he
asked questions
How much?
When will..?

Why does..?
Where is?
He was a voracious learner in constant search of
knowledge, sniffing out information at every
turn, every bush, even every hydrant!!! He would
find the answers to his many questions.

After his evening bone, Milton circled around
his basket and finally settled in for a good
nights sleep.
Why is it dark at night and light during the
day? he wondered. I know!

Rotation
The rotation of the Earth causes us to have day
and night
Rotation is the spinning of the Earth on its
axis. It spins like a top!
6
The side of the Earth that is facing toward the
Sun is having day.
The side of the Earth that is facing away from
the Sun is having night.
7
When Milton woke up the next morning he put on
his red sweater and went out for a walk. He
looked up when he heard the birds singing and
sniffed the light breeze.
What a beautiful spring morning! I wonder what
makes the seasons? Click

spring
summer
The revolution of the earth around the sun is
what makes the seasons.
autumn
winter
9
In the spring the Earth is waking up from
its long winters sleep. Trees begin to show
buds, flowers peek out from the ground.
Animals are waking up and birds are making
nests. The days are longer than in the winter
and the weather is turning warmer. April brings
many rain showers which help the flowers bloom in
May! People plant gardens and put away their
heavy winter clothes.

summer
Summer is warmer than spring. The Sun's rays hit
the Earth at a more direct angle during summer
than during winter. The days are much longer
than the nights. People like to spend time
outside swimming, riding bikes and having picnics
because of the warm weather. Plants are growing
and gardens are in full bloom.
11
Another name for autumn is fall. In the fall the
days get shorter and the weather is turning
cooler. Leaves turn bright colors and begin to
fall off the trees. Animals get themselves ready
for the long, cold winter. Just as the animals
get themselves ready for winter, people harvest
the foods they grew during the summer. You
might like to pick apples or visit a pumpkin
patch.

During the winter, the Sun's rays hit the Earth
at an extreme angle. The days are very short. The
weather is colder and people tend to stay inside
more. They put on lots of warm clothing before
they go outside to build a snowman or go
sledding. Some animals are hibernating
while others have gone to warmer places.
It is too cold for
them and they cant
find enough food.
winter

Milton stretched and rolled in the grass.
Looking up he could see the stars in the night
sky. Now Milton understood about day and night.
He also understood that when the Earth travels
around the sun we get the seasons. But he was
still wondering about how the Earth moves in our
Solar System.
Are we the only thing moving around the Sun?
14
Revolution
Our home, Earth, is one of the nine planets in
our Solar System. The planets all revolve
around the Sun.
15
There are nine planets in the Solar System.
Their names are
MercuryVenusEarthMarsJupiterSaturnUranusNep
tunePluto
The planets all revolve around the sun. Yes, they
do!
16
The Planets All Revolve Around the Sun (to the
tune of Shell Be Coming Round the
Mountain) Oh, the planets all revolve around the
sun. Yes, they do! Oh, the planets all revolve
around the sun. Yes, they do! Theyre spinning
and theyre twirling. Theyre revolving and
theyre whirling. Oh, the planets all revolve
around the sun. Yes, they do!
17
Now I have a better understanding of how we get
the seasons and what causes day and night. The
Earth is always moving! Hmmmm, now I wonder
Join Milton for other excellent adventures. The
