Steve Biko The Soul of South Africa's Freedom
By Kelly Stefany Bryant Barile

Early Life
  • Stephen Biko was a well renowned
anti-apartheid activist in South Africa during
the 60s and 70s. Biko was born on December 18,
1946 and was raised by his widowed mother who
believed very much in education. As his schooling
years went by Biko became a very promising
student so he was awarded sufficient funds to
attend boarding school. In the year of 1966,
Stephen attended the University of Natal
Non-European Section to study medicine, starting
off a great path of education that had eventually
led him to become an activist.

Colleges
  • At the University of Natal, Stephen soon became
a member of an organization called the National
Union of South African Students. After attending
a NUSAS convention at Rhodes University, Biko was
displeased with the limitations that the group
brought so he then organized his own group that
had many different races such as Africans,
Indians, and Asians. This organization came to be
known as South African Students Organization.
Steve Biko became president of this and traveled
to many colleges, expressing his fruitful ideas
    about South Africans.

Remember that You are a Human Being, Too!
  • Black is beautiful! is Steve Bikos
philosophy and famous quote. He feels that
blacks in South Africa should view themselves as
human beings. Quoted form Steve Biko, this is
what he said his quote means Man, you are okay
as you are, begin to look upon yourself as a
human being. He wanted blacks to know that they
dont have to change who they are but to be
themselves and instead of having others push and
boss you around, just take pride in being who you
are and stand up for yourself.

THE APARTHEID AND STEVE BIKO
  • As Stephen Biko began to become stronger
and rally more support the Apartheid was born.
This was the government that imprisoned South
Africa and controlled them under a single,
non-opinionated rule. Steve Biko was the opposite
of this since he completely opposed the Apartheid
and always spoke out against them at large public
rallies. The Apartheid soon became aware of
Bikos intentions so they soon tried to stop him.
At his protests the military along with the
police would show up, gunning down any protestors
that stood in their way in an attempt to
assassinate Steve. Nobody was allowed to repeat
anything that Biko said or his opinions, and he
wasnt allowed to talk to more than one person at
    a time.

he was first taken away by the police, he ailed a
severe headache. He was on his way to Pretoria
Prison when he died from either a major headache
or starvation. People also speculated that Biko
may have taken a severe blow to the head caused
by a blunt weapon during his transfer to the
prison. There are many different views about his
    cause of death.
