Three types of racing at Delph
  • Fleet Points Racing
  • Early Points
  • Summer Points
  • Autumn Points
  • Handicap Racing -
  • Wednesday Evening A and B
  • Frost Bite
  • One off Events
  • Pursuit Racing -
  • As advertised

3
Recording Calculating Results
  • You will need-
  • The signing on sheet
  • Pre printed sheets to keep the lap times
  • Pre printed sheet to keep the finishing times and
    result
  • Pens / pencils
  • The computer
  • Two people
  • Binoculars
  • You will find all of these things in the RCC.
  • You may have to print out 1, 2 or 3 from the PC

4
Preparation before during the race
  • Once the competitors are leaving the shore, enter
the competitors on the Race record sheet based on
the info from the signing on sheet.
  • Keep the paper record in fleets to allow you to
keep the lap positions and times.
  • On this sheet record the date / race number /
course / Race Officer / wind strength / number of
    laps Etc.
  • Make sure you have the correct sailor and boat.
    (People do swap)
  • (Make sure the Laser rigs are correct)
  • Enter the competitors into the Race Computer.
  • Record the lap times on the race sheet and the
    computer
  • In points racing the fleet position will suffice.

5
Recording The Finish (Pursuit)
  • In a perfect world of equal sailing talent and
equal conditions all boats will be on the same
piece of water at the finish time.
  • Life isnt like this so the leading boat at the
finishing time is the winner, etc
  • You will need the whole team.
  • Objective is to note position (not time) of all
    boats.
  • At a mark this is easy.
  • On a reach or run it may be easy.
  • On a beat it will be very difficult.
  • The result is a simple finishing order.

6
Recording The Finish (Fleet Points)
  • The position of the finish will be predetermined
by the course set on the day by the RO
  • Make sure that there are two people available in
    the RCC at finish time
  • Record the finish time for each boat
  • If times are difficult their fleet position will
    suffice
  • Record the finish times on the computer.

7
Recording The Finish (Handicap)
  • The position of the finish will be predetermined
by the course set on the day by the RO
  • Make sure that there are two people available in
    the RCC at finish time
  • Be aware that in handicap racing slow handicap
boats will do one lap less than others (and could
    finish first on the water).
  • Be aware that a lapped boat (eg FB Series) cannot
finish first but could finish second on the water
  • Note the number of laps as necessary and record
the finish times on the race sheet
  • Record the finish times on the computer.

8
Lapped Boats
  • The SIs allow for a lapped slow boat in
handicap racing to be finished after being lapped
    and still given a result.
  • This requires the Recorder to estimate a total
    Elapsed Time.
  • There are two ways to do this-
  • Assume other boats are sailing 3 laps and the
lapped boat sails 2 laps. Add to the time for 2
laps, the time for the last lap of the last boat
in the same fleet which completes 3 laps. (This
will give a time greater than the boat which
sails the full course and hence is a reasonable
    estimate).
  • If there isn't another boat in the same class,
add the time for the last lap the boat completes
and so arrive at a time for 3 laps. (Hence the
    reason for recording times)
  • Enter these amended results onto the results
    sheet
  • Enter these amended results into the Excel
    synopsis.

9
Working out the results 1
  • NB. Only in Pursuit and Fleet Points Racing will
first boat (in fleet) on the water to finish be
    the winner
  • Retired boats score the number of boats
attempting to start that race plus one.
  • Number of boats attempting to start includes all
boats with a finishing time, all those who
retired after starting, AND all those who
attempted to start but may not have gone through
the start (this last category scores RTD).
  • Boats that do not start score number of boats
attempting to start that race plus one. (DNS)
  • Number of laps sailed will be clear from the
    recording of lap times.

10
Working out the results 2
  • The race record plus DNSs and RTDs will become
    the results.
  • If no amends are necessary the computer will also
    produce a result sheet.
  • Once you have saved the results to Excel you can
intervene to overwrite and amend the results to
    correct any incorrect data input.
  • Once you are happy with the Excel result synopsis
    save and print the result.
  • NB Sailors like to see this at the earliest
opportunity, but it should be correct

11
Calculating PY Corrected Times
  • Allow the computer to do this.
  • If youre really interested - this is how it
    works-
