2
Agenda for Today
  • Announcements
  • Mid-term Online course feedback survey
  • Homework 3
  • Mid-term exam on Thursday, 10/11
  • In lecture
  • Midterm review Critiques of graphs
  • What makes an effective graph?
  • MapMaker
  • In Computer Lab
  • Completing Tuesdays activity
  • Effective graph activity

3
Review Critiquing graphs
  • Whats wrong with this graph?

4
No y axis!
5
Review Critiquing graphs
  • Whats wrong with this graph?

6
Review Critiquing graphs
  • A line graph (XY graph) should not be used for a
    nonlinear X. To Fix?
  • To fix the problem, remove the maximum depth
    column from the line.

7
Choosing which graph to use
  • Pie
  • easy to understand
  • - limited in its applicability.
  • X variable must be categorical (e.g., from
    Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin)
  • X variable must be non-overlapping (disjoint).
  • The total of all categories must add up to 100

8
X-Y (line) Graph
  • Very common.
  • Requires that your X variable is a continuous
    number (e.g. height, weight)
  • Important to review the X axis to make sure that
each mark on the X axis is spaced consistently
from each other, like on a ruler or mileage
    markers on the interstate.

9
Bar Charts
  • Bar charts  -
  • Bar charts are very flexibleallow you to work
with lots of different types of data.
  • They can be used whenever there is a quantitative
variable associated with the a categorical
variable, and they can be used with a
    quantitative x-axis.
  • They are great when you have a limited amount of
data or when you what to compare more than one
    series.
  • They can look different ways

10
What makes an effective graph?
  • Each of criteria from the three types of graphs
    listed above are considered
  • Selection of the graph that will best convey your
    data
  • It is possible to have more than one effective
    graph

11
Mapmaker
  • MapMaker as a resource
  • Using MapMaker Activity 5 example
  • Note You do not need to do Activity 5, Item
    Jwell cover it now.

12
Mapmaker
  • Another example Global HIV
