Form 1 Mathematics
  • Solution

2
Summary Statistics
  • Number of Candidates 278
  • Average Score 71.88
  • Passing Percentage 92.09

3
Section A
4
Section A
  • Question 3 (Correct percentage 29)
  • III. may equal zero and, hence,
  • not necessarily positive

5
Section B Q. 1
6
Section B Q. 1
7
Section B Q. 1
  • Performed well in removing brackets
  • However, a number of students forgot to perform
multiplication / division before addition /
    subtraction

8
Section B Q. 2
9
Section B Q. 3
10
Section B Q. 3
  • Performed well in substituting
  • into the equation
  • Weak in simplifying negative fraction
  • instead of

11
Section B Q. 4
12
Section B Q. 4
  • A significant portion failed to set up the
    correct equation
  • Some even misunderstood that the two numbers are
    consecutive numbers
  • Some failed to define the unknown properly, which
leads to the deduction of marks regarding poor
    presentation
  • Some others clearly defined the unknown but
failed to draw a conclusion after solving the
    equation

13
Section B Q. 5
14
Section B Q. 5
  • The performance is unsatisfactory
  • Many simply copied Figure 1 onto the isometric
    dotted paper

15
Section B Q. 6
16
Section B Q. 6
17
Section B Q. 6
  • (c) (i)
  • A worrying proportion used equality sign to set
up the algebraic expression instead of an
    inequality as required

18
Section B Q. 6
  • (c) (ii)
  • Performed poorly in proving whether a certain
    number satisfies the inequality.
  • A significant portion just presented with a
bunch of numbers without any statement and then a
    conclusion was drawn

19
Section B Q. 7
20
Section B Q. 7
21
Section B Q. 7
22
Section B Q. 7
  • (c)
  • Some computed the interest during the mentioned
period, instead of the amount as required
  • Some others mistakenly used the expression
  • instead of

23
Section B Q. 7
  • (d)
  • A significant portion failed to recognize what
    percentage change is

24
Section B Q. 8
25
Section B Q. 8
26
Section B Q. 8
  • A significant portion did not study the question
    carefully that they used
  • as one of the angles in
    either or when solving
    x and y .

27
Section B Q. 9
28
Section B Q. 9
  • (b) A significant portion failed to simplify
the fractions as the final answer

General Recommendations
  • Seventeen candidates have more than 5 marks being
deducted for poor presentation and the wrong use
of units. One of them have even committed in nine
of such mistakes. You must take note of the
    importance of proper presentation.

30
General Recommendations
  • Another important issue on presentation is the
proper use of statements in your workings. Many
students presented their solutions with simply a
bunch of numbers and then using the final number
to write a conclusion. This poor habit in
presentation must be improved as you will deal
with more complicated manipulation and logical
    arguments.
