Born 1844 in Allegheny City, Pittsburgh, but
raised in Philadelphia. Her Parents traveled a
lot, as it was their way of learning. Mary had
visited most of Europe around the age of 10.
- Mary had a sister, brother, and of course a
mother and father. Her sister died in 1882 after
they had moved to Paris. Mary was 38. - Marys mother also fell ill, so Mary stopped
painting to help her mother and sisterher mother
regained health and Mary continued painting.

Mary Cassatt was an Impressionist Painter and
Printmaker.
- Marys Parents didnt want Mary to be an
artist, but she did it anyway. At the
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Mary
Started studying painting for four years. -
Mary Cassatt was best known for her paintings of
mothers and children.
- Mary got annoyed of her instructors, male
students, and slow courses that she wanted to
study the Old Masters, so in 1866 she moved to
Paris and did so.

Marys first painting was excepted by the Jury
into the Paris Salon in 1872.
Critics of the Salon said her colors were too
bright and her portrait was too precise.
Later on Marys style changed. She started
painting more simpler paintings of mothers and
children. She didnt identify herself with an art
movement anymore and left impressionism.
- Edgar Degas was a pastel painter. She Liked his
artwork and said it Changed my life. They met
and he invited her to a impressionist art
exhibit. They became friends. - Marys art hung in the art exhibit.

- Mary visited Egypt and was intrigued by the
ancient art, but when her brother died she
stopped painting until 1912. - The time period she stopped painting was less
than two years.
Mary was diagnosed with multiple problems such as
diabetes and cataracts.
These Problems didnt stop her, but in 1914 she
was near blind. This is when she stopped painting.
Mary helped in womens suffrage by putting her
art in a exhibition to support the movement. She
also painted Modern Woman on the side of Women's
Building of the Chicago exposition.

painting was of Marys Mother. Unfortunately it
