2
Objective
  • Examine the degree of nation-wide as well as
    statewide telecommuting by
  • analyzing each states telework initiative
  • Use Decision Support System (DDS) to enhance the
existing research on the factors of
    telecommuting.

3
Objective
  • Be of interest to those who are willing to
increase their level of understanding of
    telecommutings scope and efficiency.

4
Factors to Assess Telework Initiatives
  • Examines the telework initiatives of each
    state based on
  • Economy
  • Commuting challenges
  • Distance learning

5
Variables Identified
6
U.S. Regional Divisions
7
Data Sources
  • U.S. Census Bureau 2000
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics 2000
  • Yahoo 2003

8
Research Issues Examined
  •
  • 1. States with strong economies, high
    commuting issues, and a progressive
distance-learning program are predicted to have
    a progressive distance-learning program.
  • 2.  States with weak economies are predicted
not to have a progressive telework initiative.
  • 3.  States with progressive distance learning
programs are predicted not to have a
    regressive telework initiative.
  • 4.  States with high commuting issues are
predicted not to have a regressive telework
    initiative.
  • 5.  States with strong economies are predicted
not to have a regressive telework initiative.

Research Issues
  • The data warehouse was created in order to
produce information in the form of reports,
charts and tables that were used for examining
    the issues.

Summary of Findings
  • 1.      States with strong economies, high
    commuting issues, and a progressive
distance-learning program were found to have a
    progressive telework initiative.
  • 2.      States with weak economies were found not
to have a progressive telework initiative.
  • 3.      States with progressive distance learning
programs were found not to have a regressive
    telework initiative.
  • 4.      States with high commuting issues were
found not to have a regressive telework
    initiative.
  • States with strong economies were found
not to have a regressive telework initiative.

Findings Commuting Challenge

Findings Sum of State Points

Conclusion
  • The more progressive a state tends to be, the
more pronounced level of telework initiative the
    state will have.
  • The southern and the western regions of the
United States received the highest points, while
the northeastern region received the lowest
points, which means that the southern and western
regions are more progressive in terms of its
    telework initiatives.

Directions for Future Research
  • Create a web-enabled telework GISDSS
    (Geographic Information System Decision Support
System) to contribute to on-going research in the
    area of information systems
  • Expand the Decision Support System by
including multiple years of data in order to
    construct a time-series analysis
