Welcome to GWAVACon
  • Protecting GroupWise
  • Using SAN Technology
  • Session Speakers Judy Crum, Mike Daniels
  • Company The Harding Group Inc.

2
Why GroupWise
  • Secure Documented Vulnerabilities
  • GroupWise 9
  • Notes/Domino 72
  • Exchange/Outlook 357
  • Reliable 52 of users say they have not had to
reboot their GroupWise system for more than six
    months

3
GroupWise Vs. Other Email
  • 87 of GroupWise users have less than 10 hours of
    downtime per year
  • 66 of Exchange users experience more than 10
    hours of downtown per year
  • GroupWise had 69 less unplanned downtime

4
Protecting Your GroupWise System
  • Companies recognize that messaging and email
systems are as important, if not more so, than a
    dial-tone.
  • Companies care about always having access to
    their applications and data.
  • Data that is not available does not exist.

5
The Three Rs
  • Redundancy Duplication or repetition of
elements in electronic equipment to provide
alternative functional channels in case of
    failure.
  • -Dictionary.com

6
The Three Rs
  • Redundant Infrastructure
  • Power
  • Dual Grid
  • Generator
  • UPS
  • Environment
  • Security
  • Cooling
  • Electrostatic Discharge
  • Network
  • Internet
  • Pathing

7
The Three Rs
  • Redundant Platform
  • Server
  • Fault Tolerant (High Availability)
  • Storage
  • Dual (Active/Active) Controllers
  • Multi-Path
  • Hot expandable
  • Hot upgradeable
  • Hot patchable

8
The Three Rs
  • Redundant Applications
  • Novell Cluster Services
  • Protection against server hardware failure
  • Protection against server LAN and SAN
    connectivity failure
  • Novell Business Continuity Cluster
  • Geographically dispersed
  • FC, IP, iSCSI

9
The Storage Solution
Magnitude 3D
  • Storage Clustering
  • Unmatched resilience
  • Loosely-coupled, N way
  • Dynamic simplicity
  • Deployment and management
  • Pay as you grow
  • Single solution edge or core
  • Industry leading storage TCO
  • Acquisition, deployment, management
  • Without the Complexity
  • Magnitude 3D

10
The Storage Solution
  • Enterprise Storage Infrastructure
  • Distributed resilience
  • N-way flexibility
  • Dynamic tuning
  • Zero Server Footprint
  • Infrastructure independence
  • Seamlessly Scalable
  • Performance
  • Capacity
  • Zero Downtime Upgrades

11
Free Your Servers
  • Server Hardware Upgrades
  • How long does it take to backup your data before
    your server hardware upgrade?
  • How long does it take to migrate your data to
    your new server hardware?

12
Direct Attached Storage (DAS) Hardware Upgrade

13
Storage Area Network (SAN) Hardware Upgrade

14
Advantages of Booting From SAN
  • Efficient Use of Time No waiting for Backup and
    Restore
  • Less Hardware Conflicts The storage controller
    remains the same.
  • Higher Quality Data No dependency on the quality
    of data on tape.

15
Simplified DR
  • Replicating Boot Partitions Simplifies DR Steps.
  • Clustering Provides Many to One DR
  • SAN Boot Provides Hardware Agnostic DR

16
Typical GroupWise Restore
  • Restore Area A location you designate to hold a
backup copy of your Post Office so that your
GroupWise client users can access it to retrieve
mailbox items that are unavailable in your live
    GroupWise system.
  • A restore area is only as useful as the PO data
    that is regularly backed up.

17
Typical GroupWise Restore
  • Use the restore utility in ConsoleOne to setup a
    restore area.
  • Grant the POA R/W access to the restore area if
    located on a different server.
  • Restore the PO to the restore area location.

18
Typical GroupWise Restore
  • Restore entire mailbox for the user requires
user to manually delete old items
  • Allow users to restore their own items from the
GW client, by accessing the restore area
    themselves.

19
New Paradigm
  • Utilize 3rd party Trusted Application.
  • Trusted Applications 3rd party programs that
can log into POAs in order to access GroupWise
    mailboxes.
  • Program uses the call CreateTrustedAppObject
along with the gwtapp.h header and a gwtapp.dll

20
New Paradigm
  • When the trusted application is installed,
GroupWise generates a trusted application key and
a trusted application record which contains a
    copy of the application key.
  • Each time the application runs, GroupWise
verifies the record and the key.

21
New Paradigm
  • Trusted application can be managed through
    ConsoleOne.
  • Ability to change Description, IP Address, IP
    Port, and Require SSL.
  • IP Address Leaving blank allows access from any
    IP Address.
  • Require SSL POA must be configured to use SSL.

22
Demonstration
  • Questions?
