Title: Migrating to AD

1
Migrating to AD
  • Microsoft
  • Active Directory (AD)
  • Services

2
What is AD?
  • AD is a network system from Microsoft.
  • It will replace Novell.
  • It will allow
  • Enhanced security
  • Synchronizing of more passwords! ???
  • Quicker deployment of software
  • Remote assistance for technical problems
  • File access from home! ???

3
Why AD?
  • Simply put management and cost
  • 30,000 networked computers in NISD
  • 11,000 staff accounts
  • 300 campus servers
  • 40,000 e-mails per week
  • 7,000 wireless access points
  • AD makes managing all of the above easier and
    cheaper.

4
When AD?
  • This summer newly deployed computers will be
    migrated.
  • The rest of the migration to AD will possibly
    take place this summer.
  • Migration could take 10 days.
  • Tech crews will be here daily.
  • Convert up to 90 computers per night
  • Convert roughly one building/floor/section per
    night
  • Schedule TBA

5
What do I have to do?
  • Before May 1, you must provide Laurie with a
list of licensed software on your computer (other
    than the standard Office, etc.).
  • You must have purchased it with a PO (unless its
    textbook software).
  • Free software received at a convention probably
    wont be approved.
  • but can be submitted to Laurie ASAP for
evaluation by Tech Services just in case
  • more

6
What do I have to do?
  • POs and licenses for software purchased after
2004 are on file w/ Tech Services (but you still
need to furnish Laurie with your list) (and the
    CDs if you have them).
  • If Margie/Vickie doesnt have a copy of the PO
you need, it might be possible to contact Edward
    Barba in Records.
  • Laurie will send you the forms for listing
    software.
  • more

7
What do I have to do?
  • Before May 1st, you must back up all the files on
your C drive (My Documents, other files, etc.)
to a CD or flash drive.
  • Your H drive can also be used to back up files,
but please do not put large files such as digital
pictures or videos there put those on a CD or
    flash drive.

8
Reimage Form
  • All staff will need to fill out the Reimage form
and tape to the front of their monitors before
leaving for the summer or before the migration
    begins.
  • See Reimage Form and other AD Info.
  • Questions? Call Laurie Hoffman (2433) or
    Mary McBeth (8116)

9
How will AD look?
  • You will probably see little difference except
for the login screen being Microsoft instead of
    Novell.
  • Student computers will have an auto login.
  • All computers will have an update and auto
shut-down in the late evening (but you have the
option of canceling if you're still working).
