challenges of Ontario Hydro and other North
    American utilities
  • Now an independent company serving the needs of
    North American energy sector clients
  • Over 250 employees, expertise in generation, TD,
    environmental and energy services
  • Consulting business with state-of-the-art
    laboratory and test facilities

3
Energy Consulting
  • Distributed Energy Solutions
  • Energy Management

Distributed Energy Solutions
Energy Management
4
Energy Consulting Activities
  • Deregulation Energy Procurement
  • Strategic options and action plans for optimizing
    benefits from energy dollars
  • Feasibility Studies
  • Health Care, educational government facilities
  • Ice Rink and entertainment facilities
  • Energy Audits Modeling
  • monitoring and verification studies
  • best practices and benchmarking
  • Energy Management Systems
  • Integrating Real-time Energy Use information
with BAS and Distributed Generation Operation
  • Advanced End-Use Technologies

5
KINECTRICS Extensive Laboratory Facilities
  • Main Building constructed in early 1960s
  • Constant Volume System with Terminal Reheat
    (electric)
  • Started energy efficiency program in 1990s

6
Efficiency Improvement at Kipling
  • SUPPLY TEMPERATURE RESET
  • Constant Volume system with Constant Air Supply
    temperature - 13 C all year round
  • Reprogrammed Control system to reset to 18 C in
    winter
  • Savings of 60,000 per year in reheat
  • Reduced humidification load
  • Cost - 0 - programming done by operator
  • Improved comfort in building

7
Efficiency Improvement at Kipling
  • OVERHEATING PROBLEM IN SHOULDER SEASON
  • Building suffered high temperatures on warm days
    in spring before chiller startup
  • Economisers found to be closing on outdoor
temperature rise even when chiller not operating
  • Reprogrammed control system to keep economizers
    open when chiller not operating
  • Delayed need for chiller start-up

8
Efficiency Improvement at Kipling
  • ECONOMISER CONTROL
  • Economisers closed to minimum ventilation
position when outdoor air temperature above 18 C.
  • Found them closing and chiller operating on sunny
    days when temperature only 10C
  • Outdoor sensor reading 8 C higher than ambient
    due to solar radiation
  • Shielded sensor required to eliminate problem

9
Efficiency Improvement at Kipling
  • VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE RETROFIT
  • Pilot project carried out to install VSDs on
supply and return fans to reduce flow at nights
    and weekends.
  • Potential one year payback
  • Had problem with trip of supply fan due to power
    quality problem
  • Steam humidifier kept operating even though no
    supply airflow
  • Found that safety switches for airflow and high
humidity sensing had been installed in return air
    duct.

10
Other Experiences
  • New building with state-of-art HVAC system found
    to have high electricity bills.
  • Building control system not set up to log
    electricity uses even though instrumentation
    installed.
  • After setup of logs, found that chiller was
running in January, without knowledge of
    operator.
  • System needed recommissioning to eliminate
    problem.

11
Other Experiences
  • New building with state-of-art HVAC and control
system found to have high electricity bills.
  • Lighting controls not working properly for ice
rink area - operating on medium level when set to
    low.
  • Estimated savings of 2000 per year.

12
SUMMARY
  • Savings can be achieved in older buildings by
reprogramming of controls and by checking that
    equipment is operating properly.
  • Newer buildings can also have problems.
  • Operators need to be able to understand systems.
