Sir Sidney Poitier
  • Born February 20, 1927
  • Academy Award-winning Haitian-Bahamian American
    actor, director, and activist
  • Starred in over 50 films
  • Broke through by consciously defying racial
stereotyping, giving credibility for black actors
    to mainstream film audiences.

Making History

  • nominated for an Academy Award
  • (for The Defiant Ones--1958)

  • an Oscar for Best Actor
  • (Lilies of the Field--1963)
  • Won an honorary Academy Award
  • in 2002 for lifetime achievement

Bahamas to Miami to sell tomatoes
  • First married to Juanita Hardy from
    1950-1965--they had 4 girls
  • Currently married to Joanna Shimkus (since

8
Somewhat interesting
  • Directed 8 movies, including the comedy Stir
    Crazy
  • Knight Commander of the Order of the British
    Empire (KBE) in 1974.
  • In 1983, unbeknownst to Poitier, impostor David
Hampton spent several months in New York City
posing as "David Poitier," Sidney Poitier's
nonexistent son. By the time of Hampton's
exposure and arrest, he had used this ruse to
gain access to private clubs, as well as
hospitality and money from the rich, privileged,
and famous of New York City. Poitier is therefore
mentioned extensively in John Guares play Six
Degrees of Separation (later filmed) which
    dramatized this incident.

High Praise
  • Superstar Denzel Washington called the veteran
actor and director "a source of pride for many
    African Americans.
  • A luminary James Earl Jones ventured that his
colleague had played a great role in the life of
    our country.
  • At the AFI banquet, Jones praised his friend's
work on behalf of the civil right struggle,
declaring, "He marched on Montgomery Alabama
and Memphis Tennessee with Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., who said of Sidney 'He's a man who
never lost his concern for the least of God's
    children."'
  • Rosa Parks lauded Poitier as "a great actor and
    role model."
