  • SYMPTOMS
  • Fever, weight loss, night sweats
  • Blurry vision, floaters
  • Dysphagia, thrush
  • Dyspnea, cough, CP
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain
  • HA, AMS, Dementia
  • Depression, Suicide
  • Skin lesions, rashes
  • SIGNS
  • Candidiasis (oral, esophageal)
  • Oral hairy leukoplakia
  • Meningismus (except in cryptococcus)
  • Dry rales, consolidation
  • Confusion, dementia, focal deficits
  • Maculopapular rash, Kaposi sarcoma

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP)
  • Normal CXR 6-23
  • Bilateral interstitial infiltrates
  • CT patchy ground-glass areas
  • P.jirovecii
  • Most common OI in HIV-infected patients
  • Dyspnea, fever, nonproductive cough

CNS Toxoplasmosis
  • T1 weighted gadolinium-ehnanced sagittal MRI
  • Thin-walled, hypodense, ring-enhancing lesions
  • Edema
  • Mid-line shift
  • Multiple lesions 80
  • Basal ganglia, gray-white junction parietal,
    frontal lobes, thalamus

CNS Lymphoma
  • T1-weighted MRI w/ gadolinium (L BG)
  • Ring-enhancing lesion
  • Surrounding edema
  • Multiple lesions 50
  • Can be 4cm
  • Basal ganglia, deep white matter

HIV Myelopathy
  • T2-weighted MRI
  • High-intensity lesion in C2-C5 posterior spinal
    cord
  • During late-stage infection (LOW CD4 count)
  • Assoc w/ AIDS dementia complex, peripheral
    neuropathies opportunistic CNS malignancies
    (lymphoma, PML)
