• Founded in 1992
• Organisational principles approved in Mexico
  City, April 1994, by 12 countries
• Recognised as a Continental Foundation, Berlin,
  Sept. 1994
• Incorporated, July 1995

• 36 organisations in 19 countries
• Total population served of 721 million of which
  444 million are in Latin America and the
  Caribbean
• Geographic reach from Alaska in the north to
  Tierra del Fuego in the south

• Private, non governmental

• Independent of commercial organisations
• Based on an association of all people of
  goodwill of a society
• Managed by volunteers and staff

Emergency Cardiac Care

• Since 1998 the IAHF has, in partnership with the
  American Heart Association, provided a training
  and certification programme in ECC in the region
• Achieved through a network of National
  Resuscitation Councils and Training Centres, in
  more than 16 countries
• Over 20,000 persons trained in fiscal year 2002
  in ACLS, PALS and BCLS

Primary Objectives

• Determine the prevalence of HBP, diabetes and
  dyslipidaemia and its associations
• Estimate Intima Media thickness of carotid
  arteries and determine correlation with the
  previously mentioned risk factors
• Evaluate the impact of socio-economic status, its
  contribution to cardiovascular risk and its
  correlation with other risk factors

• Determine the prevalence of other risk factors
• Evaluate risk factors, treatment and adherence to
  treatment

• Both sexes
• Age 25-64 years, living in urban areas
• 200 persons in 4 age groups (10 year intervals)
  for each sex (800 men and 800 women) per city
